2. BRIEF NOTESABOUTTHE SHORT FILM
• Written and Directed by Nicholas Penrake
• It’s about a young girl that discovers the body of her dead brother buried at
the bottom of the garden, and then develops a strange supernatural
friendship with the corpse.
3. ONE DEVELOPED CHARACTER
• In this short film, although there are quite a few characters- the main
developed character is Mina- the focal character of the film. The audience
learns a lot about her through the narration and the dialogue between her
and the dead body. You hear all her opinions; thoughts and feelings, thus
feeling connected to her as a viewer.
4. CIRCULAR NARRATIVE
• The circular narrative could be the fighting of the parents- as the parents
are shown to be fighting in both the beginning and the ending of the short
film.
5. CATALYST
• The catalyst could be the argument between the parents as it is this which
makes Mina go outside- leading to the discovery of the body. She also rein
acts them fighting with her dollies.
• However, the catalyst could also be the spade as it is this what she uses to
discover the buried body.
6. AUDIENCE EXPECTATIONS
• The audience expectations are played with at the right beginning, as no-
one would expect this sort of morbidity to be happening in such a
seemingly ordinary place.
• Also, the audience only finds out towards the end that this play session is
actually all in her mind and she is instead playing with her dead brother’s
corpse.
