Keep Your Refrigerator Running Right
Your refrigerator is one of the most
important appliances in your house. With
these simple tips, you can do at home,
you can keep it running right for many
years.
Check the seals
Loose seals are a big problem that can
cause bigger problems down the road.
Loose seals let cool air seep out. The
compressor has to work more and work
harder to keep the contents cold. You can
check the seals by sliding a dollar bill
between the door and seal. If it moves
easily, you need to get the seals checked.
This video from The Learning Channel
shows how to do it.
Clean the coils
The condenser coils are a heat exchanger for the fridge. When dust builds up
on the coils, they don’t work as efficiently. Less efficient means more and
harder work by the condenser and motor. Dust can also cause other
problems. Here’s a video on coil cleaning from Angie’s List.
Keep stuff in the fridge
This may sound odd, but it works. A full fridge has items that cool down and
retain that cool. This keeps the inside colder longer. It works like putting ice
in a cooler. If you don’t have much, store bottles or jugs of water in the
fridge. When the inside stays cooler, the moving parts do less work and use
less energy.

Set the temp
The ideal temperature in your fridge is 37-40 Fahrenheit. The freezer side
should be at 0 F.
Don’t panic
When the power goes out, leave the fridge and freezer closed. If you have
kept it maintained, the fridge will keep your food safe for several hours.
Take food from the pantry while you wait for the power to come back on. If
the power is out for more than 4-6 hours, then you need to take out
leftovers and milk to eat and drink immediately.
If your fridge is acting up and you can’t figure out what’s wrong, Mr.
Appliance in Cary has the experts to get your refrigerator running the way it
should be.
