Common Fixes for Common Appliances
Before you pick up the phone and call an
appliance repair service, it is a good idea to
check and see if the repair is something minor.
This will save you a considerable amount of
money and time. Here are a few common
household appliances and their quick fixes
which often do not require a technician.
Garbage Disposal – Garbage disposals are
motors, and motors can grow hot quickly. A
garbage disposal that is running hot will shut
itself off, similar to a circuit breaker. This is a
self-protection action, and the disposal will
need to cool for a time. Once cooled, push the
reset on the side or bottom of the unit.
A stuck unit will need the blades turned. There
is often an Allen wrench attached to the bottom of the unit for this. Most
hardware and DIY stores sell a special disposal wrench. Either way, a few
twists will often free things up nicely.
Lights – If the light goes out and will not work at the switch, check the
circuit breaker first. Before hauling out the ladder and new bulb, check for
the GFCI outlet. This is a special outlet that has a circuit breaker built into
the unit. The reset button, often in red, will be tripped. Simply push it, and
you will be with power again.
Refrigerator – A dead refrigerator and pets is a dead giveaway. The
refrigerator goes out; check the coils for pet hair. Coils cool the refrigerant
fluid in the compressor and are what makes the refrigerator cold. Hair
causes overheating and triggers a special switch that prevents overloading.
Coils are often at the bottom and easy to access. Clean with a coil cleaning
brush (home centers and DIY stores) and vacuum.

Coils on the back require the unit to be moved. Pull the unit out to clean.
Clean coils make the unit run more efficiently and will save you money on
the utility bill.
Gas Stove – A burner that will not ignite is a covered igniter from when the
teenager helped themselves to an extra helping and spilt food (not that this
has ever happened before). Clean the igniter with a toothbrush. An electrical
ignition will have a small ceramic nub on the top or under the seal strike
plate. Replace the seal strike plate correctly when done.
Electric Range – If the electrical stove won't work, turn the burner off and
remove from the socket. Plug it back in and give it a wiggle. A loose feel
means the connection is loose. Bend the prongs out a small amount for a
better connection. Use gentle pressure as too much could push the socket
out of the bracket.
