2. Introduction
• Extending the current Internet and providing connection, communication, and
inter-networking between devices and physical objects, or "Things," is a growing
trend that is often referred to as the Internet of Things.
• “The technologies and solutions that enable integration of real world data and
services into the current information networking technologies are often described
under the umbrella term of the Internet of Things (IoT)”
• Typically, IoT is expected to offer advanced
connectivity of devices, systems, and services
that goes beyond Machine-to-Machine -
communications (M2M) and covers a variety
of protocols, domains, and applications.
3. • The interconnection of these embedded devices (including smart objects), is
expected to usher in automation in nearly all fields, while also enabling advanced
applications like a Smart Grid.
• A smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses analog or digital information
and communications technology to gather and act on information - such as
information about the behaviours of suppliers and consumers - in an automated
fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the
production and distribution of electricity.
4. Trends
• Smart Cities:
-Smartphone Detection
-Smart Roads
-Smart Parking
• E-Health:
-Patients Surveillance
-Medical Fridges
-Ultraviolet Radiation
• Security & Emergencies:
-Explosive and Hazardous Gases
-Radiation Levels
-Perimeter Access Control
Access control to restricted areas and detection of people
in non-authorized areas.

6. Areas of Interest
• For any device we need to have a good set of hardware requirements, so i am interested in
implementing the hardware which consumes less power and works more efficiently. By
doing so cost required for the device as well as complexity may be reduced and thereby
increasing the number of consumers.
• Around 2020 things connected to internet may go above 40 billion, so the amount of
processing data is very Big to overcome this “BIG challenge we go for Big Data”.
• Big Data and the IoT work in conjunction. From the media perspective, Data is the key
derivative of device inter connectivity, whilst being pivotal in allowing clearer accuracy in
targeting. The Internet of Things, with the help of big data, therefore transforms the media
industry, companies and even governments, opening up a new era of economic growth and
competitiveness.
• If I am given an internship I would like to work on Hardware requirements which are user
friendly and flexible so that processing of Big amount of data used for smart cities and
smartphones becomes much simpler than present technologies .
7. “… a new phase of the Information Society – the Internet of Things in
which the web will not only link computers but potentially every object
created by mankind.” – The next step to The Internet of Things – Lisbon
