To Know The Possible Improvement Of Engineering
Education In Bangladesh.
5. INTRODUCTION
Education is foremost basic human need among the
fives.
Higher education has a crucial role in development
human capital education has enormous potential to
promote prosperity in the developing nations.
It ensures economic growth, leads social
transformation, and finds solutions to national
development challenges.
6. Higher Engineering education
Higher Engineering education in developing countries is
needed to be given relatively more attention because the
growth and development of any country is dependent on
qualified human resources in the Technological fields.
Engineering education has been booming throughout all
these years.
Engineering discipline is highly preferred by the students
with academic excellence due to high market demand,
social prestige and diversity.
7. Higher Education in Bangladesh
General Information:
At present there are 80 universities in Bangladesh of which 26 are
public and 54 are private universities.
Of the public Universities :
1. Ten are general universities,
2. Five are engineering,
3. Five science and technological,
4. Three agricultural,
5. One is university of arts and culture
6. One National University
7. One Open University
8. Structure of Higher Education in Bangladesh
There are 5 types of higher education available in the
country. These are:
General Education;
Science and Technology Engineering Education;
Medical Education;
Agricultural Education
Distance Education

10. Engineering Education
Engineering education is the activity of teaching
knowledge and principles related to the professional
practice of engineering.
It includes the initial education (Bachelor and or
Masters Degree) for becoming an engineer and any
advanced education and specializations that follow.
11. ENGINEERING EDUCATION: IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF
BANGLADESH
The journey of engineering education in Bangladesh started with
the establishment of Dhaka Engineering College in 1948.
Ahsanullah Engineering College was upgraded to the status of a
university under the name of East Pakistan University of
Engineering and Technology (EPUET) in 1962.
After liberation the university found its current name:
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) .
There are nine other engineering university in Bangladesh.
12. Problems of Higher Engineering Education
in Bangladesh
Access: Due to limitation of capacity, annually thirty-five
thousand successful HSC examinees may be enrolled in
these institutions. In 2008, over 275,000 students passed
H.S.C., but only less than 100,000 could be admitted in the
universities. And among them only 10,000 could be
admitted in the engineering universities.
Quality: Assurance of quality, rather than scoring just
quantity, is a critical issue in higher education. The
demand for higher education also affects the quality of
education. The investors of private Universities use it as
profit making business enterprise at all. Many students just
purchase a degree with minimum effort
13. Problems of Higher Engineering Education
in Bangladesh
Efficiency:
The efficiency of higher education is proved by the usability of
their products and their contribution to society.
In Bangladesh there are a few scopes of post graduate degrees
and research activities.
A large number of able students going abroad every year means
that education system lacks adequate facilities for higher studies
and research. In this way we lose many of the potential best
products who could have greatly contributed to the development
of economy and the society
14. Problems of Higher Engineering Education
in Bangladesh
Unsatisfactory teacher-student ratio.
Governance: Many public universities have been
accused of serious administrative and financial
irregularities, while many among the private
universities have similarly been charged specially with
lack of transparency, non-compliance of conditions set
for them by the Ministry of Education.
15. Problems of Higher Engineering Education
in Bangladesh
Lacking in National Budget to Education Sector:. In
the budget of 2015-16 there are only 12% on education
sector. In this 12% only 7% in university level education and
only 1% in post-graduate education.
Figure: National Budget
16. Problems of Higher Engineering Education
in Bangladesh
Expenditure per Student in Higher Education:
Although the education sector gets a significant share of
the government budget relative to the other sector, it is still
lower in Bangladesh than other countries, when see as a
proportion of GDP.
Figure: Expenditure per Student in Education
17. OTHER PROBLEMS:
Problems in Students’ intake and Residential
facilities.
political influence
Pay scale and service length
Vat in Education
Tuition fees of Private University
Lacking of Research center, Lab
18. Possible improvement of engineering
education in Bangladesh
Strict Government policy so that education cannot be
considered as business is to be made and universities
selling certificates
Uniform admission policy for new students must be
enforced and if possible one central admission test for
all universities may be taken. All types of „quota‟ if
any should be abolished.
On-job training programs for graduates and Study
tour, Internship, industrial attachment etc.
No political appointment
19. Possible improvement of engineering
education in Bangladesh
Retirement age of teachers in general should be made
higher and creation of special salary structure
Syllabus must be updated in every 2-3 years
considering local industrial requirements or
Technology change etc.
All universities should start offering post graduate
degrees immediately to enhance research activities.
Teachers must be provided with sufficient funds to do
research.
20. Possible improvement of engineering
education in Bangladesh
Cheaper higher educational opportunities in Bangladesh
should be utilized.
Diverting relatively more national budget to Education
sector.
No VAT in education.
Residential facilities for the students. If the students of
engineering sector get separate residential facilities, it will
be very helpful for students. Because we know the students
of social science unit don’t read more like engineering
students.
21. Conclusion
Some of the present problems in tertiary Engineering
or Technical education have been discussed. Also
some suggestions have been given for possible
improvements.
In fact the total education should be made influence
free from all sectors.
The net result will be multidimensional, competent
and conscious engineering graduates who will
eventually lead the nation to a new era.
