2. Spacing Out
Spacing out is when someone is talking to us but we ignore them because our mind
has wondered off.
The student is talking to the teacher but he is thinking about lunch.
3. Pretend Listening
Pretend Listening is when you still aren’t paying much attention to the person but
pretend to be by saying things like “yeah” “cool” “uh-huh”.
The boy is talking about a trip or something and the girl is pretending to listen by
saying “mmm hm”
4. Selective Listening
Selective Listening is when you only pay attention to the part of the conversation that
interests you the most. If you hear a word that interests you then you pay attention to that
part only.
The parents are talking to the kids but the kids don’t listen so
they say something about chocolate and then the kids start listening
5. Word Listening
Word Listening is when you only pay attention to the words being said not the body
language or the feelings and emotion.
The student is trying to explain something to the teacher but it seems important
based on his body language but the teacher doesn’t pay attention to it so he thinks it
isn’t important
6. Self-Centered Listening
Self-Centered Listening happens when we see everything from our point of view.
Probing- When you are talking to someone and the keep asking you questions before you
can even think of an answer.
Advising- When we give advice from our own point of view.
Judging- When we listen to others we judge them about what the are saying n the back of
our heads.
The girl doesn’t even care about that the other girl’s grandpa
died and only wants to talk about herself.
