The golf shop staff assists and registers customers for play. Staffmay also help with tee times, merchandising,
receiving and banking of player fees, tournament administration and much more. Good interpersonal skills
and customer service are needed to be successful at these positions. The golf staff is the front line of
communications and helps to ensure that a golfer has a good experience.
Starter - The starter maintains the starting times and tee sheet, and ensures that golfers get off the first tee
in a prompt and orderly manner. This job is crucial in keeping the tee times on time. Starters must possess
excellent interpersonal skills and be able to handle customers in a friendly and courteous manner. Starters
also are very important in making sure that customers have properly paid for their round. The starter also
helps golfers find a game if they are by themselves. The starter also is an important part of making sure
customers will have a pleasant golfing experience.
Ranger - The ranger travels around the golf course, monitoring the pace of play and helping golfers. The key
to this position is being friendly and courteous when directing play. Good interpersonalskills and tact is very
important when helping to speed play. The ranger also serves as a communications vehicle back to the pro
shop for status reports and emergencies.
Merchandiser - A club pro runs the pro shop, which can be a key profit center for a golf course. The club pro's
duties include ordering merchandise, stocking the shop, selling merchandise and understanding the needs and
desires of the club's golfers.
Organizer and Supervisor - Responsible for the golf course's day-to-day operations. Duties include organizing
and communicating tee time policies, working out the details of club competitions and tournaments -- both
among the members and for outside corporate groups -- insuring a good pace of play by training and
supervising starters and monitors, and supervising other members of the golf staff.
Public Relations - Members of a golf club run the gamut in terms of personalities and behaviors, and a talented
club pro understands how to relate to members on an individual basis. It's an essential duty of me to get to
know the members as both people and as golfers. By relating well to the members, I create a harmonious
atmosphere that's also conducive to a successful career.
Reason for Leaving Still employed in current position.
