7 Empathic Archetypes
Empathy is not about being nice.
It’s about understanding.
Empathy provides us with diverse perspectives
for problem solving that can lead us to new and better
ways of thinking, being, and doing.
These 7 archetypes map to
behaviors most commonly
elicited when we are attempting
to act with empathy.
In discovering your strongest and weakest
archetypes, you can better understand how
to work within teams.
The Sage
The sage is fully present
and inhabits the here and now.
The sage represents wisdom
and being fully in the moment.
Look to the sage when a
situation becomes untethered
from the present.
The Sage asks many questions including:
Where do you feel most present?
Grab a journal or teammate to reflect
on your answers.
The Inquirer
The inquirer questions and
interrogates assumed truths.
They ask deep questions that
demand contemplative
answers. They are one part
reporter, another part
therapist.
The Inquirer asks many questions including:
What do you continually ask yourself?
Grab a journal or teammate to reflect
on your answers.
The Convener
The convener is a host and
anticipates the needs of others.
They understand the
importance of space and space
holding; realizing the space
we share is an active member
of an experience.
The Convener asks many questions including:
What makes an experience meaningful?
Grab a journal or teammate to reflect on
your answers.
The Alchemist
The alchemist is an
experimenter, testing
and learning at all costs.
They are never afraid to fail
in the pursuit of knowledge;
confident the best work comes
only from countless hours of
experimentation.
The Alchemist asks many questions including:
What does approaching a breakthrough
feel like? Grab a journal or teammate to
reflect on your answers.
The Confidant
The confidant is a listener
with the ability to observe
and absorb. They keep
confidences private to create
a sense of safety and strength
for those around them.
They hear to listen instead
of simultaneously planning
what to say next.
The Confidant asks many questions including:
How do you build trust?
Grab a journal or teammate to reflect
on your answers.
The Seeker
The seeker is daring, confident,
and fearless. They are a
boundless explorer, living
outside of their comfort zone
and embracing new challenges.
They know that unfettering
their pursuits will eventually
lead them to the answer.
The Seeker asks many questions including:
When is failure productive?
Grab a journal or teammate to
reflect on your answers.
The Cultivator
The cultivator is committed
to nurturing with purpose
and intentionally growing.
They understand the greater
purpose and can lead others
towards the goal on the
horizon. They’re committed
to developing ideas and are
intentional about every action.
The Cultivator asks many questions including:
When is failure productive?
Grab a journal or teammate to
reflect on your answers.

Get into an honest headspace.
Begin to assess your strengths and weaknesses.
Think of a person in your life who best
embodies each archetype. For example,
Martha Stewart is a clear convener.
Next, review your own life and identify a
moment you most embodied an archetype.
How did you feel?
Using the following spider graph, plot where you feel
most and least comfortable with each archetype.
Knowing the below you can focus on where you’d like
to redirect your energy.
