Professional Experience
Bell Integration (contract in Glasgow) –SQL/Oracle DBA, Apr 2015 - present
Performed a SQL Server healthcheck on a variety ofdifferent versions,from 6.5 through to 2012.
Based on this healthcheck,provided a list ofrecommendations to our customer on the most efficient
way to move forwardwhilst improving uptime, support levels (from MS), ease ofadministration,
performance and optimisation.
Have joined the on-call rota providing supportfor DB2 (after some in-house training), SQL Server
(multiple versions), and Oracle (multiple versions).
Providing general support to both SQL Server and Oracle on a day to day basis.
Checking through CVs collated by the management for full time DBA candidates to providea technical
overview oftheir abilities.
Wood Group Kenny - Lead T echnology Engineer, Aug 2014 to Nov 2014 (made
redundant)
My duties include providing general ITsupport to a team ofnon-ITfocussed engineers whilst learning
the workings ofthe Technology Group in which I have a senior role.Team duties are:
 Formatting complex data for import to the NEXUS IC application.
 Preparing the setup oftraining courses for external candidates. This process involves re -
imaging the iMacs required to provide a fresh image for a full course.
 Preparing equipment for ouroffshore team including running ofNEXUS IC software in order
to collate video footagefrom the ROVs, identify and mark points on pipelines (and various
other subsea components)
 Writing and developing SQL scripts to provide a variety ofreports and traffic light alerts
Amor Group (now Lockheed Martin) - Oracle/SQL DBA,Jun 2013 to Aug 2014
The Amor Group are an ITconsultancy where employees are selected for theirspecific skill set, and
then contracted to various energy sector companies.
I have worked on 3 sites in slightly differing roles since joining the company,namely:
1. ASCO - SQL Server DBA
I was tasked with customising their company database and providing secure backups. I proposed a 3
phase project. The opening phase had an immediateeffect on performance by moving key databases
to more powerful servers.
The second phasewas to upgrade and patch all the instances
The third phase was to consolidate all the instances in order to make the whole database architecture
easier to control and manage. All stages were completed successfully.
2. Salamis (Bilfinger) - SQL Server DBA
Duties included a full analysis ofdatabaseperformance using tools such as Solarwinds, and based on
the data obtained, I devised a methodology to ensure greater efficiency and speed,in preparation for a
SAP implementation
3. Stork T echnical Services - SQL Server DBA
I was engaged to upgrade and consolidateStork’s dated, neglected and, in some cases, unsupported
group ofscattered databases (150+) migrating them on to three VMs.I had installed the latestversion
of SQL, and patched it up to the latest Service Pack, then designed the most appropriatemaintenance
plans.
Ardenta Ltd - Oracle DBA/T echnical Analyst,Oct 2012 to Mar 2013
Ardenta are an IT consultancy responsible for developing fully managed services for the online
gaming industry.My duties included:
• Oracle 11g DBA, keeping databases up to date and performant, as well as dealing with any
issues which should arise. Oracle databases/application servers were used for “The Health
Lottery”, one ofour main Oracle clients.
• SQL Server DBA using 2008R2 databases - evaluating any problems and advising the
directors.Focussed primarily on scalability and ultimately futuredirection.
• Informix DBA – supporting existing clients.
• Password and security management.
• Updating Microsoft OneNote using either SSH or Telnet.
• Advising on the feasibility ofopening a VPN gateway to places like China.
• Supporting Linux/Solaris systems, when required.
Aberdeenshire Council - Oracle/SQL Server DBA,Aug 2001to Oct 2012
• Responsible for keeping database optimised with as little downtime as possible.Involved
considerable pressure at times, given that it was the biggest employerin NE Scotland.
These corporate databases held extremely sensitive data,such as Social Work, Revenues
and Benefits and a huge Oracle Financials database.
• Reduced a 40-server mess ofDBs into a smooth, easily administrable 6-server 2005,
2008 and 2010 farm dependent on vendorrequirements.
• Management ofa database analyst whom I trained in both Oracle and SQL Server. I found
watching his progress very satisfying, and as his skill set grew, it took pressureoffthe
remainder ofthe team.
• Updating all technical documentation as versions progressed.
• Transforming entire system to a manageable streamlined process.
• Working very closely with the Solaris/Microsoft teams to ensureadequatedisk space.
Installed new servers (both physical and virtual in the MS environment), and co -
ordinated huge overlap ofour jobs by effectivenetworking.
DHL - Informix/Oracle DBA,Nov 1999 to Aug 2001
DHL are a global delivery company who had a data centrein Staines (SW Greater London) which no
longer exists. My duties included:
• DB admin of Oracle 8i and 9i, including multiple upgrades from 8-9 (with 9i being
released as I worked there) –I had the support ofOracle experts from all over Europe
(and occasionally Africa) in a team ofaround 11 DBAs.
• Informix DBA, continuing from my time at Londis I was employedprimarily as an
Informix DBA and ultimately as the lead Informix DBA. I was responsible for contractors
and provided specific staffing/budget reports as well as contributing to strategy and
change.
• Trained as an Oracle DBA, although I was primarily responsible for Informix.
• Completed 4/5 Oracle courses, despite being the Informix lead, but progressed enough to
provide relevantand useful support where necessary.
Londis Holdings - UNIX Sys Admin/Informix DBA,Sep 1996 to Nov 1999
Londis were a national chain ofgrocery stores, with theirholding company (along with all their IT)
based in SW London. I had previously worked at Shell in Aberdeen as a UNIX/MPEX administrator,
and wanted the challenge ofa move to London,so I formed my own company and went thereas a
contractor.
• MPEX – HPUX administrator, responsible for backups/restores, day-to-day fire fighting
Became technical team leaderofboth UNIXand Informix which involved considerable
workload and day/night shifts.
Prior to my time at Londis, I worked in operations at Shell, and offshore on v arious platforms and
semi-submersible rigs.
