Project Name: - Education Management and Information System (EMIS)
Education Management and Information System (EMIS) is a computerized system which deals with collection and
updation of data regarding Primary and Secondary Schools of Karnataka, Enrolment of children and Teachers etc.
EMIS maintains information on 65,000 Schools, 1 crore students, 3 lakh teachers. This data is useful for planning and
monitoring departmental activities and educational schemes.
EMIS is a system to improve the quality and effectiveness of educational planning and management, not only a variety
of data is required but is needed at a time and is a format that conforms to the requirements of stakeholders operating
at various geographical and administrative hierarchies. The complexity of the multi level decision-making process and
control mechanisms increases due to wide geographical dispersion of institutional network representing school
locations.
4. Design and management of consistent, efficient and functional information for such a dispersed institutional network
are a major challenge facing the Education sector. This task is simplified by the use of EMIS for the team involved in
development, maintenance and modernization of information systems.
My primary role in the project was to give DBA support for more than 8+ Oracle Databases (2+ Prod,5+ Dev/Staging/DR)
of different versions .
Responsibilities as a Database Administrator:
• Locally managed tablespaces were used which track all extent information in the tablespace itself. This results in
improved performance as it eliminates recursive operations and reliance on data dictionary.
• Identified, resolved, or provided recommendations to other different kinds of the performance problems ranging
from Database performance problems to I/O hardware performance problems.
• Performed database tuning using Explain Plan, hints, utlbstat/utlestat,
• Implemented database refresh using full export. Used EXPORT/IMPORT to do table level and full database
defragmentation.
• Database and SQL tuning to improve performance of loads
• Implemented table partitioning to improve performance and data management.
• Bitmap indexes were used on low cardinality columns as they result in reduced response time for queries and
substantial reduction of storage space.
• Managing database security. Creating and assigning appropriate roles and privileges to users depending on the user
activity.
• Database server tuning. Proactively monitored hit ratios on different components of the SGA. This included tuning
of the shared pool, databases buffers and redo buffers
• Implemented Query rewrite for complicated queries which includes many joins and sort operations
Apart from the above-mentioned tasks, daily monitoring was carried out before start of business hours to ensure
database availability and smooth functioning of databases. Daily monitoring includes checking whether all databases
are running, listener is running, disk space availability checking for errors in alert logs and trace files, etc. Corrective
action is taken for any of the problems before start of business hours.
