1. Research Essay
you will complete the following:
• Pick a topic and develop a research question to guide you through inquiry processes
• Learn about classical argumentative techniques, including Rogerian argument
• Draft an essay that both addresses the opposing view AND makes your view clear and,
ultimately, the most favorable perspective using secondary research
• Share your writing with your peers and your instructor to see how an audience reacts to
your essay
• Revise, proofread, and edit your essay according to feedback you received using
strategies presented in course materials
Grade Breakdown:
• Clear research statement/ thesis claims 10 points
• Synthesis of sources (at least 5) 40 points
• Two differing points of view clearly articulated 40 points
• Proper MLA citations 25 points
• Writing clarity/ grammar 10 points
Note: I will be grading both problem, solution, and argument based on your use of terms and
concepts from The Norton Field Guide: All chapters assigned from the “Doing Research”
Section.
