1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
By Michael Bond
2. Young Females
I believe that I have represented young females in a positive way because I made sure that my
model posed with an expressionless face to show purity and innocence. This is a positive way of
representing females in my product because it doesn’t create them into a sexual object in any
way. However, I have only represented white females and so this could mean an unfair
representation of females as a whole throughout my magazine. This goes against what I have
studied because when we studied the programme Primeval, women were objectified as sexual
objects in order to obtain what they want. I chose to go against this as I feel that this is an
unfair representation and a negative stereotype against women.
However, Billboard have made their artist pose into the camera while displaying all of her body
and so this would suggest an underlying sexual theme. This is an negative stereotype that
women use their sexuality to their advantage and so is a negative representation of women as a
whole.
4. Young Males
I have represented males in a represent young mixed race males in position way by
making him pose directly into the camera with a blank expression in order to show
that there is no difference between any young males just because of race. I don’t
believe that I have represented young males in a negative way because I haven’t
made him look macho or muscular in order to attract an audience. I have kept this
fair representation throughout my magazine of young males.
However, in Vibe, males are represented as rebellious and are posing in a
provocative manner and so this would be a negative stereotype and a negative
representation because not all males are like this.
