Representations in the Media-Cheryl Cole

 1. 1. Cheryl Cole – Media Representations
 2. 2. Representation and change

Depending on how and when a picture is taken, the representation of someone can be changed.

For example, Cheryl, below with the rest of girls aloud in 2008 is represented as a glamorous, classy and successful looking woman because of her clothing and the setting(ITV1-X factor). She is presented through the ‘male gaze’ in this instance because she’s in a stereotypical feminine evening dress showing off her figure. The reason for this is that her dress is primarily for men’s admiration.

The picture to the right is very contrasting to the above. She’s with Will.i.am who is a famous rapper and is wearing a hoody. This changes her representation. Instead of conjuring up thoughts of class, you may think of a ‘chav’. This picture, although the representation is different, is still presented through the ‘male gaze’-she’s wearing a boob tube and her midriff is showing which again is for male pleasure.
