Until the end of the 19th century the rapidly growing cities (due to industriali-
zation and capitalism) were dominated by buildings with facades in „Neo-
Styles“.
The reality of the towns were accumulations of similar-looking apartment-
blocks with several backyards......badly lit and ventilated.
The Arts and Crafts movement around the designer William Morris, the
architect Philipp Webb and the theorist John Ruskin rejected the industrialization
and its effects on architecture and art by prefabrication and mass production
3. William Morris: “I do not want art for a few“
It favored a turnback to a medieval craftsmanship – concerning architecture and art.
Purpose was to supply the daily life of people with quality-products in order to
prevent the spoil of aesthetics by industrial produced goods.
It favored traditional forms, materials and techniques in architecture, for example
the English cottage surrounded by garden.
