July 2009 - April 2012: KitchenPorter & Bartender, Three HorseshoesPub, East Leake,Loughborough:
Initial duties as a Kitchen Porter involved aiding w ith the smooth running of a busy kitchen, including w ashing dishes, preparing starters
and desserts, as wellas providing w aiting serviceswhen necessary.In May 2011, I w as promoted to the role of bartender, w hich involved
daily dealings w ith customers and ensuring that the bar w as maintained and operated in an efficient manner as a member of a team. This
job required good communication skills in order to establish a rapport w ith all patrons of the pub and maintain a pleasant environment for
customers. Subsequently, as a more senior member of bar staff Iw as responsible for training new employees, requiring clear leadership
and organisational skills. When the venue w as booked for an event, I w as often called upon to manage the bar and front of house,
demonstrating that I am capable of performing in a pressurised situation. This indicates that I am not only able to w ork w ell as part of a
team, but am also capable of assuming a senior role w ithin that team w here necessary.
July 2011: M ember of a fundraising callingcampaign, Loughborough Endowed Schools:
This tw o w eek campaign involved establishing contact w ith alumni of my school in an attempt to raise funds for future school projects,
securing £60,000 in total. A key part of this job w as being able to make conversation w ith strangers and establish a connection on a
personal level, requiring good communication and listening skills to ensure this w as carried out successfully. Working in a team of 15
intensely over a tw o w eek period also meant that the ability to w ork w ell w ith others w as essential.
Summer 2009: Work experience with M oss Solicitors, Loughborough:
One w eek’s unpaid w orkexperiencewith a solicitors firmin Loughborough involving a variety of tasks, ranging from general jobs around
the office such as photocopying and filing, helping individual solicitors w ith paperworkand dictations, as w ellas sitting in on meetings and
offering advice w herever possible.
VOLUNTEERING:
September 2014 – present: General Secretary & 1st
Team Captain, University of Exeter Lacrosse Club:
During my 4th
year at Exeter I took up both the roles of General Secretary and Men’s 1st
Team Captain w ithin the University of Exeter’s
Lacrosse Club. The former involved assisting the club captain in the everyday running of the club, as w ell as taking responsibility for co-
ordinating all alumni communications and events, and taking minutes at all w eekly committee meetings. My role as 1st
Team Captain
required me to organise a scheduled preseason, as w ell as w eekly training and gym sessions throughout the year, and organising
transport and referees for matches. These roles both required efficient time management and good organisational skills, as w ell as
demonstrating that I have the necessary leadership skills to lead a team in both sporting and administrational roles.
February/M arch 2014: Lacrosse Coaching, St. Leonard’s Primary School, Exeter:
Ran a 6 w eeklacrosse taster course for a group of pupils aged 10-11, going into the schoolfor tw o hours a w eek as part of a team from
EULC. Coaching the same group of pupils meant that a rapport needed to be established to ensure that the sessions w ere as enjoyable
as possible w hilst still being productive and w ell structured to allow
for maximum improvement.
April 2013 – April 2014: Social Secretary, University of Exeter Lacrosse Club:
Responsibilities include the organising and running of w eekly socials for 100-120 members, as w ell as the organising of larger events
throughout the year, such as our Christmas and End of Season Dinners w hich can attract up to around 100 and 250 guests respectively.
This role requires good organisational skills in order to ensure that socials and events are executed efficiently, as w ell as good
communication skills so as to interact efficiently w ith sponsors, venues and individual members to ensure a good time is had by all.
October 2013 & February 2014: Lacrosse Coaching, Exeter University:
Ran 3 coaching sessions on each occasion for children aged 7-11, as part of the University of Exeter’s ‘Sporting Stars’ programme. Due
to the age of the children involved, creativity and enthusiasmw ere essentialw hen designing and carrying out exercises to ensure that the
children remained engaged and enjoyed the sessions. The events w ere both ran as part of multi-sport days, w here the children took part
in a variety of different sports, and at the end of both days they voted Lacrosse their favourite session (around 60-70 children in total).
M ay 2013: Lacrosse Coaching, King’s College, Taunton:
Led coaching sessions for pupils aged 13-18, dealing w ith various abilities and skill levels. Sessions had to be flexible yet enjoyable
enough to ensure that all pupils felt challenged but in a fun, friendly environment. Good communication skills w ere therefore essential in
order to establish an affinity w ith students w hilst maintaining sufficient authority to conduct the session effectively. The age and ability
differences betw een different students also required the ability to adapt the sessions at short notice so that all participants felt fully
engaged at all times.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR INTERESTS:
Sport:
I am captain of the University of Exeter Lacrosse Club’s Men’s 1st
Team as w ell as being captain of a mixed team in our club’s internal
league. I have also captained a 6 a-side football team for the past 2 years, and previously captained my halls’ hockey team during my first
year, both as part of the University’s intramural leagues. At school I played for the 1st
XI hockey team, again taking up the captaincy on a
number of occasions. These experiences demonstrate my ability to w ork w ell as part of a team, and have allow ed me to develop my
leadership skills through taking control of a team of individuals and w orking efficiently to ensure that each of those individuals are
performing to their fullpotential. At the University of Exeter Lacrosse Club’s End of Season Dinner 2013, I received the John Best Aw ard
for outstanding contribution to the club, demonstrating the passion and endeavour I seek to apply to all aspects of my life.
Charity:
In May 2012 I took part in the Great West Run (half marathon), raising around £2000 for Help for Heroes as part of a team from Exeter
University Lacrosse Club. I have completed the 10km Rock Solid Race assault course on tw o occasions, raising around £3500 for ABF
The Soldier’s Charity almost £1500 for HemiHelp in April2013 and March 2014 respectively, both as part of a team from EULC. I am also
currently in the midst of a personal fundraising effort for SOFT UK, having already completed 2 half marathons (Exeter and Falmouth),
the 15km Rock Solid Race, and am in the final stages of training for the London Marathon 2015, having currently raised in excess of £900
Other:
I w as a member of my school’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) for 3 years, rising to the rank of NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer), w here
my primary role w as to lead a section of new cadets and teach themthe necessary skills they w ould need to participate in field exercises,
drill demonstrations and overnight operations. This required clear communication skills to ensure cadets w ere taught efficiently and
creativity to make sure their time in the CCF w as enjoyable. Academically, I w as the recipient of the School Politics Prize for the highest
mark achieved at A-level, and also w on a £100 cash prize for an essay on feminism submitted to a 6th
Form essay competition,
independently judged as the best by an Oxford University Professor of Politics.
