3. STYLE
MODEL
Strong image
of the main
issue.
Band name
and a sub
heading to
give insight
to the
article.
Bold title which
draws
attention.
Black
background to
push attention
to anything on
it.
A bold typical Ozzy
quote
4. I tried to replicate the facial expressions of metal artists with my model Peter. A strong
facial expression is a large convention of a metal magazine where smiling isn’t seen
too often. Some of my pictures worked…
5. Bold title like the
Metal Hammer Issue.
Sticker to draw
attention of the
reader to another
feature of the
magazine.
Clear and easy to
read band title.
Quote/motto of
the magazine,
this is either a
quote from the
artist featured or
the magazine
themselves, my
case it’s the
magazine.
Smaller sub
headings
telling the
reader what
else is in the
issue.
The bar code is
not too obvious
on the page.
Small
subheading
revealing a
story about the
main article.
6. BREAKING THE RULES.
The rule I broke in the
project was the front cover
contents. I really dislike the
crowded packed front covers
of some magazines. I really
prefer a less crowded more
sinister look.
7. CONTENTS PAGE
Out of the 5 contents
pages I analysed, the
Kerrang and Metal
hammer pages were
my favourite. My
contents page ended
up being a mix of both
of these pages
I love the Contents
layout from Metal
Hammer, however I
prefer actual page
layout of the Kerrang,
so I had to get
creative…
Bold, easy
to read
contents
Large page
title.
Editors note
Large image of main artist
8. So for the actual writing I had the
choice of these Out of both of
these I found the metal
hammer page is more
direct and easy to use.
Whereas the Kerrang issue
looks messy in my opinion
With no real order.
For the images on the
page I could have either
added a right or left
hand column like MH,
depending if I had
enough space. Or I
could have followed
Kerrangs layout and
split the page in half
with writing on one half
and images on the other
9. I decided to add a shot of my main artist playing his
instrument, so during band practise I took some cheeky
snaps while he played, I was attempting to get same mad
look you’d get from a drummer like John Bonham but
peter is a little calmer than that sadly.
10. So this is my
contents page, I
decided on my
way to mix the 2
contents pages
to come up with
this…
I saw the editors
note in both
Kerrang and Metal
Hammer so I
decided to add one
of my own in the
same style as metal
hammer.
This is my
Kerrang half, it
just contains 2
images of artists
however I feel it
gives a bold
statement of who
they are.
I followed my style
model, Metal
Hammer, to use
their Features and
Regulars contents
A bold title to
keep the reader
going.
Easy to read
contents, this
makes it easier to
find what you’re
looking for
11. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
These are my 2 style models for my double
page spread. I love the layout of the Kasabian
page, its clear and really easy to read, where
as the Darkly page is really harsh on the eyes
which is what I want mine to look like. However
I don’t want mine looking too harsh on the eye
since my magazine is also a rock genre rather
than just metal.
Photo on the

easy to read
columns
Bold, vicious
fonts, portrays
who the artist is.
12. 3, easy to

columns of

interview
style.
Bold band
title.
A sub heading
describing
what you’re
going to read
before you do.
Music related pun
there!
Bold quote from
the artist, fans
can relate to
this.
Bold image of the
main artist who is
being interviewed
rather than the
whole band.
Page numbers and
a magazine name
to follow
conventions.
14. This is how I represent the
artists in my magazine.
This is a
stereotypical
‘black metaller’
My magazine represents my artists
as tough and rough people in
society. Rockers and metal fans
aren’t always loved by the public
and the media for their gothic ways,
so in my magazine I tried to follow
these conventions of a black
metaller to really conform to the
stereotype.
I tried to
do this
using the
biggest
metal fan
I know.
15. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT AND
WHY?
16. Team rock are the distributors of metal hammer magazine, since my magazine is mainly
metal I would say Team Rock would be my main distributors. However Bauer distribute
Kerrang which was also a style model in my magazine, therefore I feel the distributing
could be between Team rock and Bauer. But if I was going to choose a company to
distribute my magazine, I would go with Team Rock as for they are focus in rock and
metal.
18. MY AUDIENCE
• Anyone who likes rock and metal music.
• Push towards a male magazine however there are women who listen to rock and metal
therefore might be interested in this magazine.
• It’s not really aimed at any type of social class, maybe not for a rich posh kid who goes to
a private school listening to classical, then maybe more for the normal people in the UK.
(meaning anyone who isn’t rich and all posh)
• Age wise, over 11 or 12, since rock and metal has such a stigma attached to it some
parents may not want little kid reading it. The age would stop around 28 when men start to
grow out of the rock and metal scene. My magazine contains humour which is specifically
aimed at teens to twenties.

Favourite band:
Alter bridge
Favourite band:
Black Sabbath
22. To attract my audience I images
of rock and metal like using harsh
imagery and hard fonts.
Rockers and black metallers are naturally
attracted to the colour black and dark satanic
images, such as the devil, graveyards or
general death. Since metal music is
associated with death on their album covers,
music videos and with their lyrics, the fans
become accustomed to these sights.
24. TECHNOLOGY
picture
papier
This is the select tool , it simply
selects objects to move or alter the
size.
This tool is used to write any
text on the page.
I used this tool to draw some
guidelines on my page.
I used this tool to draw my
shapes out on my page, the
black backgrounds mainly.
I used this tool to rotate some
of my text on my rough cut.
The eyedropper is to
get the correct colour of
something running
through the pages.
The magnifying glass is to
simply zoom into what you're
doing to be more precise.
This little tool allows you
to change the colouring
od the whole shape, or
just the edges.
Lasso tool: Allows you to cut out a
part of the image. You can use a
magnetic lasso with snaps to the
dividing line of areas of high
contrast
Magic wand: When used,
areas of different colours are
highlighted and selected.
Clone stamp: This allows you to
take an area and clone it over
another to cover something.
Spot healing: This is used to cover any small
spots by using colours around it to cover it and
hide it.
Pen: This adds anchor points to a shape and
deletes them so you can create a curved
edge.
Fill: This tool just fills a shape with
colour, pretty simple, huh?
Blur: This softens soft edges so they don’t
look obviously cut out.
The brush: This paints on a colour. You can also soften
the edge so it isn’t too bold along with how soft the paint
it, you can have it thick or watery.
27. LE CAMEERA
Aperture: This is
the feature which
determines how
much light gets
into the photo.
Shutter speed: This
determines how long this light
will be allowed in for. The
higher the aperture and the
longer the SS the lighter it will
be. However for a still of a
moving object, the shutter
speed with have to be quick.
Zoom: This allows you to get
closer without even moving.
It’s off putting having a
camera right up in your face.
Focus: Once in the correct zoom and
distance, you have to focus on the object
or person, twisting the end of the lense till
you have a shallow or deep depth of focus
with make a good photo.
Flash: Pretty self
explanatory, it
makes a flash of
light so the image
isn't too dark.
28. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR
PRELIMINARY TASK,
WHAT DO YOU FEEL
YOU HAVE LEARNT IN
THE PROGRESSION
FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT
31. PRELIM COVER!
• Good!
• Solid use of colours, no changes.
• Easy to follow layout.
• Bad!
• Why is Moyza sat in a little box?
• The Glastonbury title is really hard to read…
32.
33. PRELIM CONTENTS!
• Good!
• The images look really nice. (especially Parsaays
circle)
• Keeping with the colour scheme of Whitley blues.
• Bad!
• Too many white gaps! It looks empty.
• The descriptions are too long, you may as well read the
whole thing.
34.
35. ROUGH CUT COVER!
• Good!
• Bold, makes a statement. You can see clearly who is the
main article.
• Clear subheadings of the other articles.
• Bad!
• How awful are the subheadings? There’s style or layout.
• It isn’t neat, it looks very amateur with the way everything is
plonked on.
36.
37. ROUGH CUT CONTENTS!
• Good!
• I personally love the set out of the text, fits my style model.
• The photos on the page are good quality.
• Bad!
• It looks boring, dull and grey.
• What even is that at the bottom? I really dislike the symbols and
the cluttered red box. (Mr Bell you were right)
38.
39. ROUGH CUT DOUBLE PAGE!
• Good!
• The social network logos in my opinion are phenomenal.
• The picture isn’t bad, it needs to be clearer but it’s a good pose location.
• Bad!
• Well…
• The black background pushes the photo into the corner.
• The text columns don’t line up properly.
• There’s a blurred spot at the left side of the image.
• It looks all mix and match, no proper order or style apart from colour wise.
40.
41. FINAL COVER!
• Good!
• The image is awesome, the way the glasses are blacked out
with the black background makes it look like the Metal hammer
issue even more.
• The subheadings actually have an order now.
• Bad!
• I’m still not sure on the yellow.
• My title could be bolder, it doesn’t stand out as much as I had
hoped for.
42.
43. FINAL CONTENTS!
• Good!
• The mix of the Metal Hammer and Kerrang contents pages, I
was surprised with how well that worked.
• I’m proud of my photo layout at the bottom, they look ordered
rather than just sat there.
• Bad!
• I still think there’s something missing in the white gap.
• Ideally I wanted more than 2 photos down the bottom half
however I was lost for time.
44.
45. FINAL DOUBLE PAGE!
• Good!
• Much nicer layout than the rough cut. I love the 3 columns
underneath the subheading of the article.
• The article is an actual interview with questions now rather than
block writing.
• The image is much better than my old one, no blur!
• Bad!
• I’d say to improve I’d make my image a bit more different to my
front cover image, I think that ruins it a bit.
• Other than that I like this.
46. So to answer the question, I feel from the progression of
my prelim to my final cut I have learnt how to apply my
feed back effectively. For example cutting out huge
black boxes and strips and the main one… USING A
STYLE MODEL TO DO THIS.
Me personally, I can see huge improvements throughout
my course and I think this is because of the
development of my computer techniques and my ability
to apply feedback.
