The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is an area in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have mysteriously disappeared. The first famous incident was in 1492 when Christopher Columbus noticed his compass was malfunctioning. The most famous incident was "Flight 19" in 1945, when five US Navy bombers disappeared during a training flight over the Atlantic along with their 13-man rescue crew. While some myths exist, it is one of the few places where compasses do not point to true north due to unusual magnetic fields. Researchers believe charged fog and magnetic forces could disorient planes and ships, causing them to crash.
