The most popular system for fabric inspection is 4 point system. Its very easy process. ASTM defines- It is a Standard Test Method for Visual Inspecting and Grading Fabrics.

System
2. Agenda
• What is 4 Point System?
• Why it is so called?
• Penalty points?
• What type of defect found during inspection?
• How to calculate defect point and its limitation?
3. 4 Point System
• Most of the apparel industry prefer Four Point rating system for determining
fabric quality, and it is certified by the American Society for Quality Control
(ASQC) as well as the American Apparel Manufacturers (AAMA).
• The ASTM D5430 standard explains how to assign points to each defect–
mostly based on its size.
• Standard Test Methods for Visually Inspecting and Grading Fabrics
4. Why 4 Point are Named as 4 Point
. . . .
The four-point system derives its name from the basic grading rule that a
maximum of four penalty points can be assessed for any single defect.
5. Inches ( ˝ ) (mm) Points
From 0 > 3″ length/width Up to 75mm 1 point
From 3.1″ > 6″ length/width 75mm > 150mm 2 points
From 6.1″ > 9″ length/width 150mm > 230mm 3 points
More than 9″ length/width More than 230mm 4 points
Defect Classification
Whenever errors are recognized during fabric inspection under 4 points system and
defect must be assigned a number of points depending on the severity or length.
Holes and openings (the largest
dimension)
1“ or less 2
Over 1“ 4
Hole point may be evaluated by size.
6. • Major woven fabric defects are
o Slubs, hole, missing yarn, conspicuous yarn variation, soiled yarn, wrong yarn.
• Major knitted fabric defects are
o Mixed yarn, yarn variation, needle line, slub, hole
• Major dye or printing defects are
o Dye spots, machine stop, color out, or shading.

8. A fabric roll 130 yard long and 45 inch wide contains the following defects:-
6 defects up to 3 inch- ...................................... 6 X 1 = 6 points
5 defects over 3 inch but less 6 inch- .............. 5 X 2 = 10 points
2 defects over 6 inch but less 9 inch- .............. 3 X 2 = 6 points
1 defects over 9 inch- ........................................ 1 X 4 = 4 points
1 hole over 1 inch dimensions- ........................ 1 X 4 = 4 points
………………………………………………………………………………………
Total defect points = 30 points
Total points scored in roll X 36 inch
Points per 100 yard square = ……………….……………………………………………X 100
Fabric width/inches X Total length yard inspected
30 X 36
= ……………………… X 100
130 X 45
= 18.4 (Defect points per 100 yard square.)
9. System Review and Limitations
• The 4-Point System assigns 1, 2, 3 and 4 penalty points according to
the size, quality, and significance of the defect.
• No more than 4 penalty points is assigned for any single flaw.
• A defect can be measured either length or width direction; the
system remains the same.
• Only major errors are considered. No penalty points are assigned
to minor defects.
