A PRESENTATION ON CASTRATION

2. CASTRATION
Definition :Surgical removal or destruction of testes.
Indication:
To make the animal docile.
For easy management in the presence of female animal.
To prevent animal from unwanted breeding.
Correction of scrotal hernia.
To promote weight gain in meat animals.

3. Species on which castration is done mostly in our
country:
1. Cattle
2. Goat
3. Cat
4. Dog
5. sheep
Cattle 1-2 months
Sheep,Goat 2 weeks
Dog 6-9 months
Cat 5-6 monyhs
Best age of castration

4. Dog
Fasting: (6-8) hours
Control:Using squeeze box
ANESTHESIA:General Anesthesia is done
Premedication: Diazepam (1mg/kg)+ Atropine
(0.05mg/kg)
Induction:xylazine HCl (1.1mg/kg)+ Ketamine HCl
(5.5mg/kg)

5. Position:Dorsal recumbency
Incision site: Pre-scrotal region
After anesthesia clipping and
shaving the incision site and
painted with tincture iodine

6. CASTRATION PROCEDURE IN DOG:
Incised tunica vaginalis

7. Ligate spermatic cord

8. After removing close by suture

9. Surgical Procedure:
1. The skin just infront of the scrotal sac is incised
2. The testicle and tunica vaginalis is elevated through
the hole in the skin
3. The tunica vaginalis is incised and the testicle exposed
(this is open method)
4. The testicular blood vessels and spermatic cords are
ligated
5. Through same procedure other testicle is removed
6. The subcut fat layers and skin are sutured closed

10. CAT
Castration in cat is same as dog, but the differences are
 For Premedication
Acepromazine(@0.1mg/kg) is used.
 In cat plucking is done due to less hair
and thin scrotal skin
 Incision is made over the scrotum & 1
incision is made for removing each
testicle
 Due to large ductus deference ligation
can be done with it,no need of suture
material.

12. CATTLE
Surgical castration:
1. Open method:
 Animal restrain in lateral recumbency &
perform anesthesia(local:2% lidocaine
HCl)(6-10) ml (Ring block or inverted V-block
at the base of scrotum)
 Incision is made down to the anterior
surface of the scrotum.
 The testicle & tunica vaginalis is elevated;
incise tunica vaginalis & remove the testicle
after ligating spermatic cord.
 Repeat the procedure on other testicle.

13. INSTRUMENT FOR CASTRATION IN CATTLE:
Burdizzo castrator
Ruber ring
Elastrator forceps

14. 2.Burdizzo castration(bloodless method)
 Restrain animal in lateral recumbency
and anesthetized by 2%lidocaine HCl(6-
10)ml.
 It is a clamp like tool use to crush &
disrupt the blood vessels supplying the
testicle.
 That causing them atrophy & die .

15. Elastic band castration:
 A tight rubber band is placed around
the neck of the scrotum by elastrator
forceps to cut off blood flow to the
testicle .
 Over time testicle shrink & fall off.

16. SHEEP & GOAT
Castration of sheep & goat is same as for cattle :
 Surgical method:
1. Open method: scrotum & tunica vaginalis is incised
2. Burdizzo castration(bloodless): smaller size burdizzo castrator is used
Elastic band castration: a tight rubber band is placed around the neck of the
scrotum by elastrator forceps.
 It is useful for lamb; kids.

17. Overall Complication of Castration:
1. Infection
2. Anxiety
3. Swelling
4. Bleeding
5. Pain and discomfort
6. Persistent masculine behaviour

18. Post operative Care
1.Antibiotic
2.Anti-inflamatory
3.Antihistaminic
4.Regular dressing wound area.
5.Restrict movement.
