Castration of pig is very important process in pig farming. It increases quality of meat and also assures sound health of the boar. The boar which are not used for breeding purpose can be castrated so that they can be used for meat purpose having high quality. These slides guide us the surgical approach of castrating pigs in farm condition. It guides us the right and efficient way of doing castration in pigs. The main reason of castrating pig is to remove the odour which comes from pig, which makes the meat not edible.

What is Castration?
The surgical process of removal
of testis of male animal is
castration.
3. 9/6/2023 Mr. Sachin Shrestha 3
Male reproductive system of Pigs
Testes is situated in closed association to body
below the anus. It is directed cranio-caudally,
caudal part being directed dorsally

Types of castrations
• Closed
• Open
Open uncovered: Tunica vaginalis are incised.
Open covered: Tunica vaginalis is left intact

Right time for castration
Young Pigs within 7 days of birth
Can be done up to 1 months before weaning or before the
onset of puberty.
If to be done lately general anaesthesia need to be given
Why castration need to be done
To remove ‘boar taint’ and make meat palatable to human taste.
Boar Taint is due to accumulation of Testosterone hormone and
Skatole on the muscle tissue, which degrades the taste of the boar
meat.
Similarly, castration decreases aggressiveness of the boar, which
helps in easy handling of the pig and decreases injuries to their
tissues.

Handling and Restraining of Pigs
After selecting pig, they need to be
grasped on hind leg and kept upside
down. This makes pig immobile.
Before beginning of the castration,
they need to be kept on dorsal
recumbency by grasping their both
limbs tightly.
Their hind limbs need to be directed
cranially and fore limbs need to be
directed caudally, such that testes
protrudes clearly from behind.

Site preparation
Furs needs to be cleanly shaved leaving no single fur. Any
shaving instrument can be used as per feasibility.
Scrotum is made aseptic with betadine.
Local anaesthesia (Lignocaine 2%) need to be injected
directly subcutaneously on scrotum and testes. Dose and
rate may vary. 0.5 ml need to be injected s/c on scrotum
and 0.5 ml on each testes and spermatic cord.
14. 9/6/2023 Mr. Sachin Shrestha 14
Incision need to de done
lateral to the scrotal septum
on one of either side. The
size of incision may vary
according to the size of the
testes.

Then, testes is pulled out from the
incision site along with the spermatic
cord.
The spermatid cord is stripped in
order to remove the inguinal fats.
Clamping of the cord is done by the
curved artery forceps temporarily.
Then, catgut (Absorbable) is used to
ligate the cord.
Tetes along with certain portion of
spermatic cord is cut with the
scalpel, and remaining portion of
spermatic cord is pushed inside
(Both).

Antibiotic powder is sprinkled inside
the scrotum.
Interrupted suture is done on the
incised part with the silk thread.
Small opening is left for drainage.
Skin heal is applied topically to
enhance healing process.
Meloxicam (Painkiller), Oxytetracyline
(Antibiotics), Tetanus, and Iron
sorbitol (if not given) are injected. IM
injection is done behind the ear.
17. 9/6/2023 Mr. Sachin Shrestha 17
Post operative care:
Regular monitoring to see if there is any complications.
Suture need to be removed after 1 week of suture or
when the wound heals.
Removing of suture in done is such manner that it leaves
no thread behind.

Application of Lignocaine in scrotum and
testes
Incision of the scrotum Clamping by curved artery
forceps
