2. Letter of Intent Thursday February 10, 2011 To Whom It May Concern: I never considered myself to be an “artist.” That label has always seemed to me to refer to those individuals owning the highest caliber of talent and an absolute understanding of the world. When listening to or reading about professional artists explain their work, I have never failed to be awed at the deliberateness of the lines, influence and inspiration behind each piece of art. It is fascinating to observe how objects, 3D forms, installments of type, color, and images meld together to form an artwork. Growing up, I was both right and wrong about my perceptions of an “artist.” While it is true that you must be deliberate in employing your understanding of the tools and skills you have studied and honed, it is also true that art can function in any way that the creator of the work needs it to serve, whether that is as communication, expression or self-fulfillment. It is my goal to further my knowledge of using art and design as a prime form of communication in tandem with my Advertising major. Through my high school career and my two years studying at Michigan State, I have acquired a respectable base of design understanding, yet there is so much more to learn. My hope is that I will be able to further my knowledge of design concepts and tools if accepted into the Design Specialization program so that I may go on to apply these lessons in my aspiration of fulfilling an Advertising Design degree.
