2. After finishing our production of our movie trailer, magazine cover and magazine poster we
had gain some audience feedback which would benefit us in our final stages of production.
This involved getting feedback from peers, teachers, family, students and friends.
I used several types of research to get the most accurate and honest feedback I could. This
involved using the internet, social media and carrying out group discussions.
3. Target Audience
After conducting research into my chosen genre (the horror genre), I found out some stats that
gave me an idea of who I was targeting. The BFI (British Film Institute) shows that 36% of males
enjoy watching horrors compared to 44% of females.
Sky horror Channel says that 58% of males enjoy watching horror however we can learn from
this that horror genre Is enjoyed by both genders. In terms of age group I will be targeting 15-25
year olds.
4. Questionnaires and surveys can be used, they are quite fast and easy to get information from as
audiences only have to answer questions and a variety of people can answer them at the same time.
However it can be quite limited and many people may find it boring to write down everything they
feel.
Social networking sites have become extremely popular in receiving information about anything! By
2021 there will be an estimated 3 billion active users on social media. Social media makes it easier to
carry out questionnaires and surveys as you can target specific people based on there information. For
example my target audience was 15+ so I would simply look for profiles that meet those requirements.
5. Twitter
Twitter:
Twitter is an online news and
social networking service
where users can post and
interact with other users.
I used Twitter during research and planning by
tweeting to them and making them aware that there
was a survey that they could fill out to help me with
my coursework.
Twitter allowed me to reach a wider audience as well
as targeting the correct age group. My target audience
is 15-25 years of age and as I am 18 my followers are
around the same age therefore making the feedback I
collect reliable.
6. Why was twitter useful?
Twitter enabled me to interact directly to my target audience and get
reliable and good quality feedback. I used twitter interactions to see
the amount of interaction the tweet gained to see how many people
would fill out the survey.
7. Survey Monkey:
Survey Monkey is an
survey where you can
create questions and send
them to people for
feedback.
I learnt a lot from carrying out this online survey including ways to improve my
magazine. I also learnt how easy it was to share my survey to loads of people
within 10 seconds. I used email and emailed all my contact who are within the
target age. I was given the option to analyse my results which allowed me to
see overall statistics of each question.
8. SurveyMonkey Questions
I asked 8 questions all of which would give me a good understanding of what my audience thought of my
magazine cover.
9. Film Poster Feedback
For the film poster I created an online survey using ZohoSurvey. I attached a screenshot of my
poster so they could easily talk about it. Some questions that I asked included:
”Do you think this poster follows conventions?”
”What do you find appealing about the poster?”

11. Using a Storyboard
As a group we had to create a shot list and then individually create a storyboard of the trailer. My storyboard
can be seen on my blog.
I created a feedback sheet and gave them to all my peers and asked them to read my storyboard and fill out the
form. Doing this gave me an early insight on what changes I had to make before I started filming, essentially
saving me time and effort. Below is a feedback form that one of my peers filled out.
Storyboard and storyboard feedback
12. Group Feedback (group screening)
We also had group discussions which was helpful for receiving specific feedback. People were able
to look at my work and list the strengths and weaknesses.
As a class we had a group screening where we viewed everyone's trailers and wrote down
comments on improvements and what went well (WWW). Doing this was a great benefit as we
gained insight on new ideas that we could potentially add before the deadline.
There were a few times where we had disagreements however to prevent arguments we had to
include it. For example I was not happy with some of the audio and video transitions that my group
members applied on the clips however to cause less stress I went along with it.
Getting feedback for the trailer was the hardest as it was a 2 minute trailer compared to a screenshot
of my magazine production work.
13. Conclusion
For both the magazine and the trailer, the feedback taught me especially how important it was to
either follow, challenge or subvert the typical connotations that are associated with this type of
genre (horror). This is because even the simplest of things can make the piece of work stand out
but only if the connotations are clear and well presented. For example a piece of feedback that I
received was that the tagline was not visible enough and some fonts that I used did not relate to
the horror genre
In terms of the trailer, the feedback received was something that I learned a lot from as well. This
is because before this unit I hadn’t really used Premiere Pro to edit a trailer as a main source of
coursework and this was my first time in doing this. The feedback that I got from my audience
was that I need “to have something that picks the pace up. In terms of the trailer, the feedback
we received was very constructive and I learnt a lot. Before A2 I had never attempted to make a
trailer.
