I believe that my main product (movie trailer) and ancillary texts (magazine cover and
magazine poster) effectively combine to create a successful, overall media product. I carried
out an audience feedback survey I asked a specific question around this topic. My audience
clearly agreed with this, identifying the links between the products.
In my magazine cover the main image that stands out is the white mask on the black
background which is a clear representation of the horror genre. To keep the link with the
poster I decided to have the same white mask feature as it would look odd if they were both
different. I thought about not including the masked man in the poster as there are more
actors that are featured however after trial and improvement I found the it looked
professional. As the masked man is seen in both the poster and the trailer, we limited the
amount of times “it” was shown as we tried to give more screening time to the other actors
When looking at pre existing media I realised there was a pattern. Each media text was
linked to one another in one way or another. For example the fonts being the same, the
colour scheme or the main image. The costume of the protagonist (the white masked man)
is shown in all three of my media texts. By showing it in all three I have made both ancillary
texts and the trailer link together well. The costume is one of the big factors as we wanted
people to think of these characters when they see a white mask and showing it in the two
ancillary texts and trailer would help the audience.
Colour was a huge part of the trailer, poster and magazine cover. Black, white and red were
the three primary colours I decided to use as they are the most popular colours that comply
with the horror genre. Spider-man is a good example. When you see red and white you
think of Spider-man which is a good strategy to increase views. We were trying something
similar to this by keeping the colours we picked limited so it’s not too confusing for our
audiences. I felt like these colours were most suited to the horror genre. Red being a colour
of blood/death and black being the colour of evil/darkness. I researched pre-existing media
texts before choosing my colour scheme and these three were the most popular. I chose
white mainly for the font colours so the audience can read it clearly.
As well as colour, fonts are also a big part of the trailer and two ancillary texts. I used similar
fonts for my poster and cover as well as the titles for the trailer. This then helped us make
sure that each part linked with each other. This would then mean our audience could
associate this font with our film as they would of seen it in three different areas and this
font could easily be put into their heads. Font was also important as we had to make sure
the font we chose was relevant and suited the horror genre, so choosing a “scary” font
would be most suitable. I got my “scary” fonts from www.1101fonts.com which have a

category for horror fonts. It took me a while to find the correct one however I am happy
with the final result.
Lastly the main characters were a big element that we included in the poster, magazine and
trailer. The main character (the neighbour) is seen on the poster, the cover and in the
trailer. I am happy with how the protagonist is perceived throughout the trailer and media
texts as nothing is given away. He is kept a mystery especially as his appearance is hidden
behind a mask. It also creates tension. In the trailer you get more of feeling of how many
character there are as just by looking at the cover and poster it is not clear how many actors
there are. I have included actors name in the cover to show that there are more characters.
