WHAT
IS
BIOMOLECULES?
BIOMOLECULES
• also called biological molecule
• any of numerous substances that are
produced by cells and living organisms.
• Biomolecules have a wide range of sizes
and structures and perform a vast array of
functions.
BIOMOLECULES
The Four Classes
of Biomolecules
 Carbohydrates
 Lipids
 Nucleic Acids
 Proteins

CARBOHYDRAT
ES
ARE
SUGARS!
CARBOHYDRATES
• the major source of energy for the
body
• are found in a wide array of both
healthy and unhealthy foods
(CH2O)n
n= number of molecules
We get 4 kilocalories per gram
of carbohydrates that we eat!
• All carbohydrates contains carbon, hydrogen, and
oxygen. (C-H-O)
• Carbohydrates can be classifies into:
MONOSACCHARIDES DISACCHARIDES POLYSACCHARIDES
MONOSACCHARIDES
• From the prefix "mono" which means one,
monosaccharides is the simplest sugar and the basic
subunits of carbohydrates.
• These compounds are white solid at room temperature
• They have polar, hydroxyl groups’ intermolecular
structures, they are very soluble in water.
C6H12O6
GLUCOSE - also called dextrose
The main type of sugar in the blood
and the most abundant
monosaccharide.
It is very important to have a steady
supply of glucose in the blood to
maintain body functions.
Blood Sugar
GLUCOSE - also called dextrose
 When too much glucose is in the blood, the pancreas
secretes a hormone called insulin which stimulates cells
in the liver, muscles and fat to absorb glucose and
transform it into glycogen or fats, which can be stored for
a period of time.
 When blood glucose drops, the pancreas secretes
glucagon, which cause liver, muscles and fat to convert
glycogen back to glucose.
Is it is a naturally occurring sugar,
found primarily in fruits like
grapes, apple, or atis.
It also occurs naturally in other
plants foods such as sugar beets,
sugar cane honey, and vegetables.it
is considered as the sweetest
naturally occurring sugar.
FRUCTOS
E
- also known as fruit sugar
DISACCHARIDES
Also known as double sugar, is the sugar formed
when two monosaccharides are joined.
Like monosaccharides, disaccharides are simple
sugars soluble in water.
CH12H22O11
LACTOSE
SUCROSE MALTOSE
SUCROSE - are table sugar
 Consisting of one glucose and one fructose
molecule.
 It is naturally occurring carbohydrates found
in many fruits, vegetables and grains, but it is
also added to many processed food such as
candy, ice cream, breakfast, cereals, canned
foods, soda and other sweetened beverages.
LACTOSE
is sugar found only in milk
also present in dairy products and
products made from milk, including
cheese and ice cream
consisting of glucose and galactose
MALTOSE
 is a sugar made out of two glucose molecules
bound together.
 It’s created in seeds and other parts of plant as
they break down their stored energy in order to
sprout. Thus, foods like cereals, certain fruits and
sweet potatoes contain naturally high amount of
this sugar.
POLYSACCHARIDES
 Is also known as complex carbohydrates
 From prefix “poly” meaning many, are large molecules that
are made up of many smaller units that are joined together.
The three common polysaccharides are: starch, glycogen, and
cellulose.
(C6H10O5)n
GLYCOGEN
STARCH CELLULOSE
STARCH
is a soft, white, tasteless powder
that is insoluble in cold water,
alcohol water, alcohol or other
solvents and is produced by all
green plants.
GLYCOGEN
is a polysaccharide that is similar to
starch.
it is also composed of alpha glucose units.
It differs from starch since glycogen
shows a higher degree of branching and is
polysaccharide that is made by animals.
CELLULOSE
is a molecule, consisting of hundreds-
and sometimes even thousands of
carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
is the main substance in the wall of
plants cells, helping plants to remain
stiff and upright.
Human cannot digest cellulose, but it is important
in diet as fiber.
When we eat food rich in fiber, which is cellulose,
it speeds the movement of food through the
digestive tracts.
FATS OR LIPIDS
 Another class of biochemical that has the job of storing
energy for later use.
 Are also found in hormones and cell membrane
components. They are molecules that contain hydrocarbons
and make up the building blocks of the structure and
functions of living cells.
Provide mechanical
protection for the internal
organs of the body and
serves as waterproof
covering in some plants and
animals.
Triglycerides - The most abundant of the lipids are the fats
and oils.
 Fats are solids at room temperature and contain
saturated fatty acids and produced only by animals.
Examples of animal fats are lard and butter.
 Oils are liquids at room temperature and contain
unsaturated fatty acids. Most oils, such as vegetable
oil, corn oil, and olive oil are produced by plants.
“PICK ME”
Direction: Pick a paper in the box, among them
contains questions written on it. Whoever
has the paper with question will have to
analyze and give the correct answer.
Direction: Answer the following questions briefly. Write
you answer in a 1 whole sheet of paper. (5pts Each)
1.What are biomolecules?
2.What are the four classes of Biomolecules?
3.What are Carbohydrates and Lipids? Discuss each.

  • 4. 2 3
  • 6. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to: a.describe Biomolecules; b.classify Biomolecules, and; c.discuss Carbohydrates and Lipids.
  • 7. “VIEW ME” Direction: Watch a video presentation about biomolecules take down notes.
  • 8. “CROSSWORD” Direction: Read the clues. After all the clues are answered, fill in the crossword puzzle. HORIZONTAL 2.It is great at storing energy 3. It is also known as Macromolecule, that means large molecule 5. Basic unit of carbohydrate VERTICAL 1. Provides quick energy to humans 4.Most known and abundant example of carbohydrates
  • 10.
  • 12. • also called biological molecule • any of numerous substances that are produced by cells and living organisms. • Biomolecules have a wide range of sizes and structures and perform a vast array of functions. BIOMOLECULES
  • 13. The Four Classes of Biomolecules
  • 14.  Carbohydrates  Lipids  Nucleic Acids  Proteins TODAY NEXT MEETING
  • 16. CARBOHYDRATES • the major source of energy for the body • are found in a wide array of both healthy and unhealthy foods (CH2O)n n= number of molecules
  • 17. We get 4 kilocalories per gram of carbohydrates that we eat!
  • 18. • All carbohydrates contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. (C-H-O) • Carbohydrates can be classifies into: MONOSACCHARIDES DISACCHARIDES POLYSACCHARIDES
  • 19. MONOSACCHARIDES • From the prefix "mono" which means one, monosaccharides is the simplest sugar and the basic subunits of carbohydrates. • These compounds are white solid at room temperature • They have polar, hydroxyl groups’ intermolecular structures, they are very soluble in water. C6H12O6
  • 20.
  • 21. GLUCOSE - also called dextrose The main type of sugar in the blood and the most abundant monosaccharide. It is very important to have a steady supply of glucose in the blood to maintain body functions. Blood Sugar
  • 22. GLUCOSE - also called dextrose  When too much glucose is in the blood, the pancreas secretes a hormone called insulin which stimulates cells in the liver, muscles and fat to absorb glucose and transform it into glycogen or fats, which can be stored for a period of time.  When blood glucose drops, the pancreas secretes glucagon, which cause liver, muscles and fat to convert glycogen back to glucose.
  • 23. Is it is a naturally occurring sugar, found primarily in fruits like grapes, apple, or atis. It also occurs naturally in other plants foods such as sugar beets, sugar cane honey, and vegetables.it is considered as the sweetest naturally occurring sugar. FRUCTOS E - also known as fruit sugar
  • 24. DISACCHARIDES Also known as double sugar, is the sugar formed when two monosaccharides are joined. Like monosaccharides, disaccharides are simple sugars soluble in water. CH12H22O11
  • 26. SUCROSE - are table sugar  Consisting of one glucose and one fructose molecule.  It is naturally occurring carbohydrates found in many fruits, vegetables and grains, but it is also added to many processed food such as candy, ice cream, breakfast, cereals, canned foods, soda and other sweetened beverages.
  • 27. LACTOSE is sugar found only in milk also present in dairy products and products made from milk, including cheese and ice cream consisting of glucose and galactose
  • 28. MALTOSE  is a sugar made out of two glucose molecules bound together.  It’s created in seeds and other parts of plant as they break down their stored energy in order to sprout. Thus, foods like cereals, certain fruits and sweet potatoes contain naturally high amount of this sugar.
  • 29. POLYSACCHARIDES  Is also known as complex carbohydrates  From prefix “poly” meaning many, are large molecules that are made up of many smaller units that are joined together. The three common polysaccharides are: starch, glycogen, and cellulose. (C6H10O5)n
  • 31. STARCH is a soft, white, tasteless powder that is insoluble in cold water, alcohol water, alcohol or other solvents and is produced by all green plants.
  • 32. GLYCOGEN is a polysaccharide that is similar to starch. it is also composed of alpha glucose units. It differs from starch since glycogen shows a higher degree of branching and is polysaccharide that is made by animals.
  • 33. CELLULOSE is a molecule, consisting of hundreds- and sometimes even thousands of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. is the main substance in the wall of plants cells, helping plants to remain stiff and upright.
  • 34. Human cannot digest cellulose, but it is important in diet as fiber. When we eat food rich in fiber, which is cellulose, it speeds the movement of food through the digestive tracts.
  • 35. FATS OR LIPIDS  Another class of biochemical that has the job of storing energy for later use.  Are also found in hormones and cell membrane components. They are molecules that contain hydrocarbons and make up the building blocks of the structure and functions of living cells.
  • 36. Provide mechanical protection for the internal organs of the body and serves as waterproof covering in some plants and animals.
  • 37. Triglycerides - The most abundant of the lipids are the fats and oils.  Fats are solids at room temperature and contain saturated fatty acids and produced only by animals. Examples of animal fats are lard and butter.  Oils are liquids at room temperature and contain unsaturated fatty acids. Most oils, such as vegetable oil, corn oil, and olive oil are produced by plants.
  • 38. “PICK ME” Direction: Pick a paper in the box, among them contains questions written on it. Whoever has the paper with question will have to analyze and give the correct answer.
  • 39. Direction: Answer the following questions briefly. Write you answer in a 1 whole sheet of paper. (5pts Each) 1.What are biomolecules? 2.What are the four classes of Biomolecules? 3.What are Carbohydrates and Lipids? Discuss each. QUIZ
