3. During your grade 3
Science class, you learned
about the three phases of
matter; solid, liquid, and
gas. Look at the pictures
then write if it is solid,
liquid or gas.
15. 1. Have the pupils go around the
classroom.
2. Have them list down at least 10
materials they see in the classroom.
3. Let them group the materials
according to the state of matter.
Ask:
What materials did you see as you
went around the classroom?
16. Look at the materials
you have listed. What if
I place one object in a
basin with water?
Observe what happen.
18. What to do:
1. Put the material one by one in a basin. Observe
what happens to each material.
2. Lift the material and squeeze. Let the water drip
down on the basin. Did the water come out? Did
the material get wet?
3. Record your observations in the chart below. Do
it in your activity notebook.
4. Do the same for each material.
5. Answer the guide questions after the activity.
19.
20. Guide Questions:
1. What have you observed with the
materials when they are placed on the
water?
2. Which materials absorb water? Why do
you think these materials absorb water?
3. Which materials do not absorb water?
Why do you think these materials do not
absorb water?
21. MATERIALS THAT ABSORB WATER
Matter aside from its phases
can also be classified according
to their properties. One of
these is its ability to absorb
water. Some materials can
absorb water, others do not
22. Materials can be classified based on
their ability to absorb water. Absorb
means to take in something like a
liquid in a natural way. Materials that
absorb water are called Porous
Materials. It is full of tiny holes that
allow air (gasses) or liquid (fluid) to
pass through.
23. Let us take a look at the pictures
below. Observe the sponge in the
first picture. Describe it. What
happens to the sponge when we
soak it in a basin with soap and
water?
26. The first picture shows that the
sponge has small holes. These
holes will absorb water, thus
makes the sponge heavy. When
we squeeze or hold the sponge
tightly it will drip droplets of
soapy water as shown in the
second picture.
27. Let us have another example
when you are in the swimming
pool, you wear a swimsuit, or rash
guard, just like what is shown in
the picture. What have you
observed when you removed and
squeezed your swimsuit or rash
guard?
28.
29.
30. There are droplets of water
coming from your swimwear
because it absorbs water. Your
swimwear is made of cloth. Cloth
or fabric is an absorbent material.
It can be made into hand towels,
handkerchief, and rags.
31. Try to get a cotton ball and a glass of
water. Put the cotton ball in a glass of
water, after a few minutes, lift and
squeeze it. Observe what will happen.
Do you think cotton absorbs water?
Why do you think so? What are the
characteristics of cotton that makes it
porous materials? Cotton is an
absorbent material too. It is used to
make cotton buds, cotton pads, and
diapers.
32. What are the materials
absorb water?
Which of the materials
did not absorb water?
36. Choose the letter of the best answer.
Write the chosen letter
on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Describe what will happen to the
sponge when placed in a
basin with water? The sponge will -------
A. absorb water C. becomes smaller
B. becomes bigger D. not absorb water
37. 2. Which of the following materials will
absorb water?
A. glass, mirror, fork
B. box, paper, metal spoon
C. cloth, cotton, tissue paper
D. plastic wrapper, aluminum foil, rubber
ball
38. 3. You want to wipe the spilled water
on the dining table. Which
of the following materials will you
use?
A. paper C. rug
B. plastic bag D. sponge
39. 4. Why do fish vendors use a plastic bag
instead of a paper bag
when you buy fish?
A. A plastic bag cannot hold heavy fishes.
B. A paper bag is hard to find while a plastic
bag is easy.
C. A paper bag cannot be easily tear down
when getting wet
D. A plastic bag does not absorb water that
can hold wet
fishes.
40. 5. Why do some materials absorb water?
A. Some materials are hard.
B. Some materials are made of plastic.
C. Some materials are made of rubber.
D. Some materials have tiny holes that let
the water in.
41. Inside your house, identify two examples
of materials that absorb water. Draw
them in your notebook
