4. NARAYANA RAO’S MURDER
FIRST ANGLO MARATHA
WAR 1775 -82
Raghoba took help of the
British for the Peshwa post.
The war between the
British and the Marathas
lasted from 1770-1782.
War ended with the treaty
of ‘Salbai Agreement’.
Madhav Rao II became the
Peshwa.
8. SUBSIDIARY ALLIANCE
Lord Wellesley, the Governor General ,
introduced it in 1789.
o It was military protection agreement between
the Company and the Indian States.
o Hyderabad was the first to enter this agreement

11. SECOND ANGLO MARATHA WAR 1803-1805
The Peshwa entered the
Subsidiary Alliance
through the Treaty of
Bassein to fight against
Holkar.
The other Maratha
family combined
together fought against
the British and got
defeated by Wellesley.
12. Third Anglo Maratha War:
Peshwa Baji Rao II
fought against the British
at Koregaon and Ashti.
Later surrendered to the
British.
The Peshwa was
pensioned off.

between the Sikh
Empire and the
British East India
Company.
• In Punjab, the Sikhs
had risen to power
under Ranjit Singh.
18. Ranjit Singh died in 1839.
Immediately, his kingdom fell into disorder.
When the British tried to invade Punjab, the Sikhs
declared war and were defeated.
The Sikhs signed treaty of Lahore in 1846.
The Sikh kingdom came under the supervision of an
English Resident.
19. Second Anglo- Sikh War:
The Sikhs wanted to avenge the defeat they
had suffered in the First Anglo-Sikh war.
The Sikhs leasers were unhappy with this
state of affair.
Many of them revolted under the leadership
of Mulraj of Multan and Chattar Singh
Attariwala in Lahore.
The English army defeated the Sikh army.
Punjab was annexed to the British Empire.
21. Doctrine of Lapse:
Lord Dalhousie, the Governor General
introduced this policy.
The adopted children of the king had no legal
right over the throne.
Princely States like Satara, Nagpur,
Sambalpur, Udaipur, Jhansi, Jaipur were
annexed.
