3. SUN AND ITS FAMILY
• The sun and the celestial bodies which revolve around the sun
forms the solar system
• There are eight planets in the solar system :
1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Uranus
8. Neptune
4. • planets do not twinkle on
their own
• Planets have a definite path
to revolve around the sun
• Planets are made up of
solid liquid and gases
• Stars twinkle on their own
• Stars do not have a definite
path to revolve around the
sun
• Stars are made up of light
elements called hydrogen
and helium
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STARS
AND PLANETS
Stars Planets
5. REVOLUTION ROTATION AND ORBIT
• When the planets complete on whole round on its
orbit of the sun it is called revolution .And the time
taken to complete one revolution is called period od
revolution
• When planets complete one rotation on its axis (i.e a
whole day) is called rotation ,And the time taken to
complete one rotation is called period of rotation
• Planets have a definite path in which it revolves
around the sun this definite path is called orbit
7. MERCURY AND ITS
FEATURE
• It is the nearest and the smallest planet in the
solar system
• Due to nearness od the sun it can be
observed just before sunrise and just after
sunset
• Mercury has no satellite of its own
9. VENUS AND ITS
UNIQUENESS
• It is the brightest and the hottest planet in the solar
system
• It appears in the eastern and the western sky before
sunrise and sunsets so it is called morning and
evening star
• It is unusual that the Venus rotates from east to west
• Venus also has phases like moon
• It has no satellite
11. EARTH –OUR HOME
• Earth consists of lithosphere(earth
crust),atmosphere(air),hydrosphere(water)
• From space earth appears to blue and green due to
the reflection of light from water and land masses
• IT TILT ON ITS AXIS SO THERE CHANGES IN
SEASON
• The earth has only 1 moon
13. MARS-THE GOD OF THE WAR
• It is the first planet after the orbit of
the earth
• And is the fourth planet from the sun
• It has 2 small satellite
• It has a thin atmosphere compared to
earth
15. JUPITER-THE GAS GIANT
• Its mass is about 318 times the earth
• It has a faint ring around it
• It has 72 or 80 moons and 4 large
moons
• Jupiter rotates very rapidly on its axis
19. URANUS
• This is the second most outer planet of
the solar system
• They can be seen only with the help of
large telescope
• Uranus is highly tilted rotational axis
• It has a thin ring around it
• It has large number of moons
21. NEPTUNE
• Netune is the most farthest planet from the sun
• It also has a thin ring
• It is the 4th largest planet in the solar system
• It is 17 times bigger than the mass of Earth
• Its approximate distance from is 4.495 billion
kilometers
22. • Asteroids:
• These are the large number of small objects that
revolves around the sun are called asteroids
• They can be seen between the orbit of mars and jupiter
• Comets:
• These are the members of solar system that
revolve around the sun
• They are usually long and they develop tail (glow)
when they approach near the sun
SOME OTHER MEMBERS OF SOLAR SYSTEM
24. METEORS AND METEORITES
• These are the bright streak of light, can be seen in the clear sky
when moon is not there These bright streak are called meteors
• Meteorites are the large meteors that reach the Earth before
they evaporate completely
• The body that reaches the Earth is called Meteorites
25. ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES
• The man made satellite which are launched from the Earth, that
revolve around the Earth are called Artificial Satellites
• Aryabhata was the first Indian Artificial Satellite
• They are used in weather forecasting, long distance
communication, live telecast and remote sensing
• The other Artificial Satellites of India are INSAT, IRS, KALPANA-
1, EDUSAT
