3. 3
WAVELENGTH: 760 nm to 1 mm
Infrared rays are electromagnetic waves
It lies between visible light and microwaves
Frequency: 7×1014 to 400×1014 HZ.
4. It has 3 types –
IRA: Wavelength is 760 nm―1400 nm.
IRB: Wavelength is 1401 nm―3000 nm.
IRC: Wavelength is 3001 nm―1 mm.
Luminous lamp(visible rays)
Non-luminous lamp(nonvisible rays)
4
5. 1)Natural source: The sun
2)Artificial source: All hot body emits IRR
e.g. Gas fire, coal fire, hot water pipes, Luminous lamp, Non
luminous lamp.
5
6. LUMINOUS LAMPS PRODUCE BOTH
INFRA RED RAY AND VISIBLE RAYS
6
For lesion of more chronic type the
effect of shorter rays may prove to
be of value and under these
circumstances a luminous lamp is
used.
Also known as high temperature lamp
Penetrates up to superficial fascia
7. 7
Also known as low temperature Lamp.
For recent injury, sedative
effect of non luminous Lamp
may prove more useful .
Non-luminous produce only infra red ray.
Penetrates only epidermis.
10. 1.Relief of pain
2.Reduction of muscle spasm
3.Sedation
4.Acceleration of healing
5.Increase range of motion
6.Facilitation of fine movement
7.Increase Blood Supply
8.Increase Joint Mobility
10
11. 1.Pain: IRR Can Reduce Pain In Superficial Areas.the
luminous is more effective than the non-luminous lamp. IRR
increase vasodilation and remove pain metabolism thus relief
pain also.
2.Muscle spasm: Relief of pain can stretch the muscle
and reduce muscle spasm.
11
12. 3.Edema: If there is chronic edema of the limbs there is
might and not tenacious exudates.IRR is applied in elevated
limb absorb.the exudates and vasodilatation of the capillaries
and reduce edema.
4.Healing of wound: IRR can use the treatment
infected hands, carbuncle and abscess by its vasodilatory
effect.
12
17. 1.Equipment required
2.Selection of source.
3.Position of the patient.
4.Check any contra-indication.
5.Position of the lamp: The lamp distance shouldbe 40cmto 60cm.
6.Duration: 15 to 20 minutes,1-2 times dailycontinue two week (It may increase to the patient
condition).
