Dear Judges:
My name is Mariela Gonzalez Guzman and I introduce to you my senior project over female
policing. I chose this as my project due to the fact that ever since I was little I have always been
interested in this work force. Since my dad had an incident with a police officer on a trip, that
made me doubt my choice in following a career in this. In that case, I decided to research the
career more and not to make an automatic choice just based on what happened to my father.
As my product, I decided to organize a portfolio as well as a video including my facilitator
arresting somebody. I decided to do these two things for a couple of reasons. The portfolio I
thought was a good idea to organize the process I’ve taken to learn all that I have about the
career. The video I felt was a good viewable item where my facilitator can go through the
process of arresting someone. She goes by the arresting process step by step. I feel like this
relates to my research paper because on my paper I talked about how different females do things
in this career as well as all the training they take in order to get to where a male is. Doing this
process was quite time consuming, but it did have it’s ups and downs. Some obstacles came in
the way but I overcame them. Meeting up with my facilitator to do the actual product as well as
waiting to get it approved took a while. My facilitator works on the weekends from 7 in the
afternoon to 7 in the morning, as you can tell, I had to go some nights and make the meeting
count which caused me to stay very late. Although these troubles came along the way, I was
proud as to how organized my portfolio was as well as all the things I learned about myself. This
was quite an experience that did help me realize a lot of skills within me.
My topic and research relates to the career of policing, because I chose a female just to get the
point of view of her on the issue of how females are treated in this field. Although it is a male
dominant career, she explained to me that a female can do just as much as them or even better,
yeah they have to work a little harder, but it’s all worth it at the end. Doing all of these meetings
and getting to know an actual female in the field, it helped me realize many things about myself.
I know I am a friendly person, but never knew just how much that changes whenever I have to
speak formally to an adult. I also learned that whenever something’s comes up in the way, I tend
to do everything possible to keep going with the process one way or another. At the end, I had a
good experience getting a real life adventure doing this, but I realized this is not the job for me.
2. Yeah I want to help and protect people, but I never noticed how much a police officer has to sit
behind a desk. I pictured police officers running around arresting people and breaking into house,
all that was just an imagination I got from movies. In that case, I do not plan to pursue this
career. I plan to still help people, so doctor is the new way to go.
The senior project was a great help making me realize that what I have always thought I wanted
to be, is really not at all what I want. It helped me actually research the career and not just come
to a conclusion based on problems that have happened in my life involving the police. If it
wasn’t for the senior project, I would of started school thinking about the wrong career choice
and it would have just been a waste of money on my parents part. This project helped me open
my eyes up realizing what I want and the skills I hold to get there. In conclusion, I’d like to thank
you for your time and appreciate the time you took in order to hear my presentation.
Sincerely,
Mariela Gonzalez
