2. Style –The style of this film is very dark. Because it is orientated round a family, it
gives a more personal feel to the audience and therefore would appear more
scary because of how real it feels, which may also be enhanced by how it is said
to be a ‘true story’.The film is based on paranormal activities and spirits.
Music – At the beginning of the film, there is no background music, but sound
effects of child's laughter, indicating the ghostly theme. As we then begin to see
more of the background story, a country song plays with a husky singer. I feel
that this is used to enhance the personal feel, as country music often sings about
family and home.Towards the end we only hear a stereotypical horror
background song, with a screech effect. Sound effects play all throughout the
trailer.
Editing –The trailer features the common horror trailer convention of quick cuts.
As we see more of what goes on in the haunted home, the cuts become more
often and quicker. This then creates the idea that lots of these haunting activities
are occurring in the home. The beginning sequence shows us old photos, which
are themed around death and dark ideas and our introduction to the paranormal
investigators is long takes, wide shots and very light scenes.
3. Characters –The Warrens (investigators) seem to us in the trailer, old fashioned, mostly
because of how they are dressed. We are then show what they do and that Mrs Warren has
some sort of 6th sense. The family affected seems like a normal, large American family. But
through the trailer we see a particular focus on the mother and the children, with the
mother being the one who is taken over by the spirit and the children being tormented by
what is in their rooms. This is typical of a horror film to focus on a female victim, most likely
because they would be seen to be most vulnerable.
Plot –The plot is based on a true story of the paranormal hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren.
They are invited into the home of the Perrons, who have recently moved into a house that
is less than welcoming. After a series of bad events at the home and a story into the
previous owner is discovered, the investigators must work to get rid of the evil spirits and
help the family.
How can I use Elements from this trailer in my own? – For my trailer, I think the editing
style of this one really suits a conventional horror and therefore I would like to incorporate
this into my own. I also like the way that the story follows out, making the plot realistic
gives audiences that instant connection and sense of anxiousness. The use of sound effects
throughout is also something I plan to use in my production.
4. Style – American horror films seem to follow along the same lines,
with a ‘true story’ of a stereotypical American family being the
victims. This film joins that chain. Focuses on demonic possession
and spirits in a family environment.
Music – At the start we hear a piano backing track with coincides
with the family introduction, but this then fades out when the film
reveals its dark side. From then on the sounds we hear are not
music but sound effects, similar to what we heard in ‘The
Conjuring’.
Editing –This trailer has made good use of its editing, as its quick
cross cuts and various camera angles make you jump even though
you haven't seen the actual film! The dark shadowing used in the
scenes is also perfect for a horror genre trailer, as it leaves the
audience wondering what is round the corner.
5. Characters – Although we have the family situation again, this is focused
more on one character and how they become a victim of the homes
haunting. And, we also have the difference of having involvement of
characters from the past, like the old owners of the house.
Plot - George and Kathy and their three children move into a house that
was the site of a murder. They decide to keep the house and try to keep
the horror in the past. This is until, George starts to behave weirdly and
their daughter, Chelsea starts to see people.
Who is the target audience for this trailer? – I think for this trailer, along
with the other 2, the audience would be 16+.A mature audience is
needed for this genre of films because of the content.Although its safe
to say you can enjoy and have a laugh while watching because it may
make you jump, the ideas behind the plot and some of the features may
not be understandable to a younger persons view.
6. Plot – Once a year, all crime is legal and no emergency services are
available. One family has their house on lockdown and each year passes
with them staying indoors and safe. However this year, their son lets a
man in who has been shouting outside for help, bloodied and scared.
Once in their house, he disappears and there is a knock at the door. A
group of young people want the man as they have ‘hunted him’, but if
the family don't give him to them, they are coming in themselves..
Style – Although this is completely different to the other 2 horror genre
films I have looked at, it still stays in the category, due to the level of
fright and blood/violence in it.This film is a more realistic member of the
genre and plays out a story that could be seen as one day coming true.
This makes it more ‘scary’ for people to watch, as its almost like watching
a ‘big brother’ type massacre.Although there is no use of the
paranormal, masks, floaty costumes and machetes help build up the fear
factor.
7. Editing –The films starts of with long scenes, with
wide camera shots, playing out a normal America. The
lighting is natural. As the purge is announced, we see
CCTV footage, with text transitions becoming more
frequent. As the events of the night unravel, the shots
become more hectic and quick cuts happen more and
more as the pace of the plot picks up.We then reach a
climax of the end of the trailer, where there is dark
scenes and a slow end, revealing the intruders coming
into the house. I love the way this film was edited as it
goes alongside the events in the film, corresponding
to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
8. Music – During the beginning sequence, there is not much sound/music, until we
begin to hear the warning/purge sirens. After this we hear a subtle beep in the
background throughout and then a eerie background sound of something being
sharpened. Most of the clips sound is not music but the actual sound effects of
the objects in the trailer and other sounds, like the doorbell. During the final
scenes of the trailer, we hear a choir singing in the background, which links in
with the ‘perfectAmerica’ idea behind the film. The use of minimal music and
more use of the sound FX in the trailer, links in with the link with reality that the
film has, as we do not have music playing in our backgrounds day-to-day.
Characters - Once again, we have a family involved in the plot of the film. Are we
seeing a reoccurring factor? I think we are. Famillies seem to be at the heart of
this genre, due to the multiple stories you can branch off them, but also because
of audience connection. We also have the man who breaks in, who we dont see a
lot apart from when he comes in the home and very much later when he tries to
help the family. The participaters of the purge who come into the family home
are the other people we meet, focusing on the spooky ringleader.
9. Who does this trailer represent? – I think in a
way, this film may look at some racial
stereotypes. The person who appears to have
done something wrong/is being chased, is the
AfricanAmerican character.This may be seen
as quite typical of today’s society and issues
with race and current issues with the police.
