3. Site Clearance
Every construction contract needs to have
some sort of excavation prior to the start of
the project. A Brown field site may need
the existing buildings demolishing and
removing where as a Green field site may
need top soils and vegetation removing.
The removal of these existing materials will
have an impact on the local environment
and will incur costs to the owner/developer.
4. Vegetation
Trees are protected by the law and removal
requires permission from the local authority.
Points to think about before removal of
vegetable waste:
– Does it need to be removed or could it be left.
– How can it be disposed of.
– Will you need permission.
– Can it be re-used.
– Will it be costly to remove.
– Will machines be needed.
5. If the top soil is to be removed
then it is cheaper to store this
nearby on site if possible. If the
site is too small then
transportation / storage will be
needed to remove it, and then the
same again to return it towards
the end of the project.
When digging the foundations of
a new build, poor quality soils and
clays may be excavated and
these will need removing. These
soils can be heavy and bulky
therefore hard to recycle and
expensive to remove.

6. Demolition
Brown field sites will probably need some kind
of demolition. If this has already been done the
site will need a survey to determine whether or
not it is suitable for the proposed use.
(EG contaminated soil upon old commercial
sites will prevent new domestic dwellings being
built unless the contaminated soil is removed)
Demolished rouble
could be recycled into
hardcore to be re-
used, saving money.
7. Raw materials
Bricklayers use Many
materials, from the clay
used to make some bricks,
to the sand, lime and
cement used to make
mortar.
Once these raw materials
are altered into a product to
be used, they become a
solid mass which is difficult
to dispose of.
8. Think about it!
• If you dig clay to make bricks can it be
replaced?
• Lime and gypsum, these are raw materials
removed from the ground for our industry?
Will these resources last forever?
• Trees are being cut down to make way for
new developments.
How should we deal with these problems
in a sustainable way?
9. Excavation and Demolition
If materials cannot be re used within the site,
the process of removal and/or recycling will
be needed.
Recycling is an important
part of everyday life.
It is very important for
construction companies to
separate their waste. This
will reduce the costs of
expensive land fill waste
disposal
11. Skips
Skips can be hired in various sizes and costs
will vary, but they all get disposed of in the
same way. They all get dumped into land fill
sites, which is not only expensive but harmful
to the environment.
12. Most construction companies now recycle
as much of their waste as possible. They
can even make money from some of these
materials such as Copper, lead and steel.
All large companies will recycle all their
waste separately and refuse companies will
recycle this waste to make new products.
13. Smaller construction recycling
Smaller companies may find it hard to store
materials in separate skips until they have a
large enough quantity to recycle.
These smaller firms could use skip
companies that separate the waste for
them, but this will be much more expensive
to do, but is better for the environment.
