2. • Matter
All matter has two fundamental properties:
• It has a volume.
• It has a mass.
Matter can be in three states:
• Solid.
• Liquid.
• Gas.
3. In nature there are many different types of
matter, called materials.
The use of materials can produce environmental
problems which we can avoid by applying the
rule of the three Rs:
• Reducing consumption.
• Reusing.
• Recycling.
5. • Heat and changes in matter
Heat is a form of energy which is transmitted
from one object to another: it produces changes
in matter.
Heat changes the state of matter.
Heat also produces changes in the volume of
objects called expansion and contraction
6. • Changes of state
MELTING
• When heated a solid
• becomes a liquid
• SOLIDIFICATION
• When cooled a liquid
• becomes a solid
EVAPORATION
When heated a liquid
becomes a gas
CONDENSATION
When cooled a gas
becomes a liquid
