Study the following set of clauses taken from the
poem “If”.
1. Between the two set of clauses, what do you think is/are expressing a
condition? expressing a result? Prove your answer.
2. Identify the verbs in both clauses. What tense is used?
If you can talk with crowds and keep
your virtue
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt
you You’ll be a man, my son.
If you can fill the minute with sixty
seconds worth of distance run
CONDITIONALS
WHAT ARE CONDITIONALS?
• Used to show an if/then relationship between two
actions (sometimes called the If-clauses)
• Used to express that an action or state of being is
conditioned on the occurrence of another action.
• Real Conditional describes real-life situations.
Unreal Conditional describes unreal, imaginary situations.
CONDITIONAL
SENTENCES
Structure :
A conditional sentence is composed of 2 parts :
If-clause + Main Clause
Example :
If she calls, I will be very happy.
If-clause Main Clause
CONDITIONALS
Zero Conditionals
Zero conditionals are used to talk about general
truths, when the result of the condition is always true
like a scientific fact and things that always happen in
a given condition.
If you freeze water, it becomes a solid.
FORM
Conditional 0 is formed by the use of the present simple in the if
clause followed by a comma, and by the result clause in present
simple.
You can also put the result clause first, without using a comma
between the clauses.
Water becomes solid if you freeze it.
If Condition Result
Present Simple Present Simple
If you freeze water it becomes solid.
MORE EXAMPLES:
1. If you cross an international date line, the time
changes.
• Explanation: This always happens, every time you cross a
dateline.
2. If you go 10 meters under water, the pressure increases to
two atmospheres.
• Explanation: This is basically always true -- the pressure of
10 meters of water equals one atmosphere.
3. Phosphorus burns if you expose it to air.
• Explanation: This is a scientific fact -- you can test it in a
laboratory.
“When” instead of “If”
Sometimes we use “when” instead of “if”
Both words express law of nature or general truth.
For example:
If it is cold, I stay inside the house.
When it is cold, I stay inside the house.
PRACTICE
I. Complete with the correct form of the verb using zero conditional
statement.
1. A person (get) ______ fat, if he (eat) _______ junk food.
2. If a person (exercise) ________ often, he always (feel)
________ good.
3. If the temperature (rise) _________ high, it (become)
__________very hot in the dessert.
4. Animals (die) _____, if you (not/feed) ____them.
5. If children (play) ______ until dark, they easily (fall)
________ asleep at night.
Study the following lines taken from the song “Time After Time” by
Cyndi Lauper.
1.If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
2.If you fall I will catch you, I will be waiting
Time after time
Question:
1.Identify the verbs in both sentences. What tense is used in the clause
which states a condition? How about in the result clause?
CONDITIONALS
First Conditionals
• Using the first conditional
• The first conditional is used to talk about things which
are possible in the present or the future -- things which
may happen:
• if clause
If you study hard,
• main clause
you will pass the test.
•if clause
•if + subject + simple present verb
If you study hard,
•main clause
•subject + will + verb
you will pass the test
STRUCTURE
• EXAMPLE:
Paula will be sad if Juan
leaves.
• EXPLANATION:
Maybe Juan will leave --
that's possible.
• Example:
If you cook the supper,
I'll wash the dishes.
• Explanation:
Maybe you will cook
the supper -- that's
possible.
If you don´t sleep well,
you will get asleep in the classroom.
SUMMARY
 Notice that we are thinking about a result that is always true for
zero condition.
 The result of the condition is an absolute certainty. We are not
thinking about the future or the past, or even the present. We are
thinking about a simple fact.
 We use the present simple tense to talk about the condition. We
also use the present simple tense to talk about the result.
 The important thing about the zero conditional is that the
condition always has the same result.
 The first conditional is used to talk about things which are
possible in the present or the future -- things which may happen:
Use the conditions and results in the box to
complete the phrases.
Conditions:
 You feel dizzy,
 you don't wear a crash
helmet,
 you heat it to 100 ºc,
 you tell a lie,
 you leave gates open in the
country,
 you throw garbage in the
river
Results:
 you get violet,
 A dog bites,
 the CD player comes on,
 Ice melts,
 it gets mad,
 You have more chance of
being killed
 the door opens
1. Water boils if __________________________________
2. If you mix red and blue __________________.
3. ________________________________ if you leave it in the
sun.
4. If ____________________________________ , take a short
rest.
5. If _____________________________________ , it becomes
polluted.
6. __________________________ if you hurt it.
7. If you pull a cat's tail, _______________________________
.
8. ______________if you are a reckless driver.
9. If you press this button,_______________________.
10. Farmers get very angry if ____________________.
