2. Geometric Shapes
If you like playing with objects, or like drawing,
then geometry is for you!
Plain Shapes are about flat shapes like
lines, circles and triangles ... shapes
that can be drawn on a piece of paper.
Solid Shapes are about three
dimensional objects like cubes, prisms,
cylinders and spheres.
3. Dimensions
A 1 dimensional shape is just a line
A 2 dimensional shape is called a plane.
A 3 dimensional shape is called a solid.
1D
2D
3D
4. Look at the 3D objects.
Geometric Shapes
In your own words, what do you know
about 3D shapes?
5. Solid shapes are 3 dimensional. They
are the kind of shapes we live in.
Geometric Shapes
It is called three-dimensional, or 3D, because there are three dimensions: width,
depth and height.
6. Properties
Volume (think of how much water it could hold).
Surface Area (think of the area you would have to paint).
How many vertices (corner points), faces and edges they have?
Solids have properties (special things about them),
such as:
7. Properties
How many vertices (corner points) these solid shapes have?
A vertex is a corner.
A vertex (plural:
vertices) is a
point where two
or more line
segments meet.
8. Properties
How many edges these solid shapes have?
An edge is a line segment between
faces..
An edge is a line
segment on the
boundary, joining
one vertex (corner
point) to another.
An edge is a line segment where two faces meet.
9. Properties
How many faces these solid shapes have?
A face is a single flat surface.
A face is any of
the individual
flat surfaces of
a solid object.
