Camila and Lore visited Valencia and studied a fair trade shop concept. The shop sells organic, regional products and employees get paid based on the food sold rather than a fixed salary. The concept could be successful in Belgium by starting a similar fair trade shop, offering work to students or those without income, and partnering with the government to direct people to the shop where they can work for food coupons rather than money. While prices may be higher than supermarkets due to organic products, the concept aligns with sustainability goals and could help people in need.
2. Our Experience
Interesting seminars
Visited local universities
Met international & local university students
Beautiful city
Ate delicious food
3. The concept
Fair trade shop selling organic, regional products.
The special aspect of this concept is that the employees
don't get a fixed salary, they get paid by the food sold on
the shop.
All products are sustainable sourced (Valencian farmers)
and presented
E.g.: no plastic packaging
Products are not imported
SDG: Responsible consumption and production, Climate
Action, Life on land
5. Research Method
For the research we used the business model
of the students in Valencia
• The students explained the concept and pro’s and con’s
We did our own research through the internet
6. Similar concept in
Belgium
Start a fair-trade shop
Offer work to students or people with low
income/ no income
Partnership with government and OCMW
==> They direct them to the shop
The people can work for food, but they do not
get paid with money but with food coupons
The products that are sold are regional
products
7. Expected
Outcome
Popular concept
May take some time for people to trust it
Must avoid conflict regarding who gets paid with which
products
a coupon system vs a fixed bag of vegetables made?
Higher prices than supermarket (because of organic
aspect)
However, people bring own container
No need for plastic packaging (less waste!)
The business saves money as they do not need to
provide packaging
8. Conclusion
We think that the concept would work in Belgium
With the partnership it would be easier to find
employees
It will help people in need (fits in SDG 1&2)
It is more sustainable No plastic, regional
products
Higher prices than in regular stores, but everything is
organic
