EFFECTIVE LISTERNING
&
PRESENTATIONS
By: Mr Fillipus Lineekela
INTRODUCTION
Two of the skills you need to develop if you want to be a
learner or as a professional are the ability to listen effectively,
and to present information in an informative and interesting
way. In this unit we’ll discuss both these skills
Exit Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit you should be able to:
• demonstrate the ability to listen critically
and analytically.
• extract specific information while listerning
• prepare, plan and deliver a well-structured,
informative presentation
LISTERNING
• Most of us can hear, but can we all listen?
• Hearing simply means that a sound has registered on
your eardrum.
• You may or may not pay attention to it.
• Listening on other hand, means that you focus on a
sound and concentrated on understanding what it
means.
What do you think is the difference between listening and
hearing?
•Hearing and listening are not the same.
•Hearing=The reception of sound.
•Listening=The attachment of meaning to
what has been heard.
1.1 Listening as an important skill
1.2 How to listen effectively
• Decide beforehand exactly what information you need
to get while listening.
• Pay close attention to the speaker’s introduction.
• Make short notes while you listen.
• Don’t let anything distract you while you’re listening.
LISTENING COMPREHENSION
When doing listening tests follow these guidelines:
• Read the question carefully.
• Analyse what is being asked.
• Find a focal or keyword which you can listen for.
• Make short notes while listening.
• Don’t allow yourself to be distracted from the important points.
• Focus on the general main idea.
EFFECTIVE ORAL PRESENTATION
Oral communication involves expressing and sharing
ideas and information as well as influencing others
through verbal and nonverbal symbols.
Tips of oral communication.
• Prepare thoroughly.
• Speak about a familiar topic.
• Realize that you are not alone.
• Focus on getting the message across to the audience.
• Use positive visualisation.
• Practice relaxation techniques.
Format of oral presentation
1. Introduction
2. Body
3. Conclusion or End
1. INTRODUCTION

• Give your name.
• Explain why you are a suitable person for this task.
• Give a brief background about the topic you’re going to
present on.
• Give an outline of what you’re planning to talk about, so that
your audience knows what to expect.

free open source software. I’ll then outline the benefits and
disadvantages of each type of website. And finally, I’ll give
you some guideline on which type of website is suitablefor
your company.
2.Body
• Once you introduced yourself and your subject matter, expand your
subject according to the outline you gave in your introduction.
For Example:
oIn the first part, I will give a few basic definitions
oIn the next section I will explain
oIn part three, I am going to show……….
oIn the last part I would like/want to give a practical example.
