What is summarising/ Summary writing?
• It is a way of shortening a text/ extract through
selecting relevant words or main points from a text
and make a short version of it.
• Means to reduce a given extract to a certain number
of words.
When summarising
• Only main points are required.
• Eliminate/ Ignore unnecessary information such as
repetition, explanation, description and quotations.
Two types of summary writing
1. Note form summary
2. Prose/ Paragraph writing
1.Note form summary
• Written in points
• Write at least five per point
• One point per bullet
• Use the key words (Content words-Words that carry
the meaning/content)
Take Note:
• Do not use your own words even it’s indicated just
ignore.
• If you write a point and exceed the space provided
you may continue to the next line, cancel the bullet
and make another bullet for the second point.
• Do not write points at one bullet, only the first one to
be marked.
2.Prose summary/ Paragraph
• Written in one big paragraph
• It has no title
• Write in logical way as main ideas appear in the text. For instance if
the question is asking about the steps, you should write them in
logical order.
• Use linking words to link/ join your ideas as well as punctuation
marks.
• Do not list but connect your ideas with conjunction.
• Use the correct tense/ concord.
Prose summary/ Paragraph continue..
• Always count your words, indicate them down your summary.
• So do not exceed the word limit and have correct number of words.
Important points to consider when summarising a text
• Read the instruction carefully and underline what you are asked to
summarise on. Start where it is written about or on.
• As reading the text, underline the relevant main points when you come
across them and avoid distractions such as examples, explanations and
elaborations. They are not needed.
• Write the relevant main points as you come across them.
• Organise your main ideas in good, logical sentences to form a coherent
paragraph.
• Mind your spelling and other grammatical aspects.
• Keep the word limit in mind and indicate the number of words all the time.
