3. What is breast cancer?
• The term “breast cancer” refers to a malignant
tumor that has developed from cells in the
breast.
• Breast cancer either begins in the cells of the
lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or
the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the
lobules to the nipple
4. What causes breast cancer?
Inherited breast cancer 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers are linked to gene mutations.
•Radiation exposure.
•Beginning your period at a younger age
•Beginning menopause at an older age.
•Having your first child at an older age.
•Having never been pregnant.
5. Stages of breast cancer
Stage I.
Cancer is invasive, meaning it has broken free to attack healthy tissue.
Stage II.
The cancer has grown, spread, or both.
Stage III.
The cancer has not spread to bones or organs, but it’s considered
advanced, and it’s harder to fight.
6. Symptoms of breast cancer
•A breast lump that feels different from the
surrounding tissue
•Changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling
•A newly inverted nipple
•Peeling, scaling, crusting or flaking of the pigmented
area of skin surrounding the nipple (areola) or breast
skin
•Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the
skin of an orange
