This document provides information about breast cancer awareness. It notes that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women and discusses statistics on how many women are diagnosed and die from breast cancer each year both in the US and globally. While death rates have declined since the 1990s due to better screening, treatment, and awareness, more funding needs to go towards prevention efforts. The document emphasizes the importance of breast self-exams and provides instructions for how to properly perform them.
Breast cancer is known as the cancer that grow up in the cells of breasts. Breast cancer is the most typical cancer detected in the women. We are celebrating October month as the breast cancer awareness month. It helps the women to get more information about the breast cancer. DDRC SRL diagnostics center in Kerala provides free mammography campaigns for the women in Kerala in this breast cancer awareness month.

Why go for Early Breast Cancer Screening?Anita Arora
In cases of breast cancer there are numerous inevitable factors that lead to its onset like aging, genetic disorders and gender. Being a female is a big risk factor as the presence of estrogen and progesterone can result in breast cancer cells growth. In such cases early detection and breast cancer screening goes a long way in ensuring that the patient can undergo a successful treatment.

Cancer is one of the most serious diseases women face. We urge women and female survivors to encourage one another to adopt a balanced lifestyle and to go for regular screenings in order to decrease their cancer risk or the recurrance of cancer.

CANSA highlights the importance of screening and early detection for breast cancer as part of its Women’s Health Campaign this October.
http://www.cansa.org.za/womens-health/
Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 35 in South Africa, according to the 2007 National Cancer Registry.
“We encourage all women to conduct regular self-examinations once a month. Know how your breasts look and feel – discuss any changes you observe with your health practitioner. It’s also very important to go for a mammogram every year from the age of 40,”

The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS

MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the structure and function of taste buds.
Describe the relationship between the taste threshold and taste index of common substances.
Explain the chemical basis and signal transduction of taste perception for each type of primary taste sensation.
Recognize different abnormalities of taste perception and their causes.
Key Topics:
Significance of Taste Sensation:
Differentiation between pleasant and harmful food
Influence on behavior
Selection of food based on metabolic needs
Receptors of Taste:
Taste buds on the tongue
Influence of sense of smell, texture of food, and pain stimulation (e.g., by pepper)
Primary and Secondary Taste Sensations:
Primary taste sensations: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Umami
Chemical basis and signal transduction mechanisms for each taste
Taste Threshold and Index:
Taste threshold values for Sweet (sucrose), Salty (NaCl), Sour (HCl), and Bitter (Quinine)
Taste index relationship: Inversely proportional to taste threshold
Taste Blindness:
Inability to taste certain substances, particularly thiourea compounds
Example: Phenylthiocarbamide
Structure and Function of Taste Buds:
Composition: Epithelial cells, Sustentacular/Supporting cells, Taste cells, Basal cells
Features: Taste pores, Taste hairs/microvilli, and Taste nerve fibers
Location of Taste Buds:
Found in papillae of the tongue (Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate)
Also present on the palate, tonsillar pillars, epiglottis, and proximal esophagus

2. First Facts
• Breast cancer is a disease in which
malignant (cancer) cells form in the
tissues of the breast.
• Breast cancer is the second leading
cause of death among women.
3. Who is Affected?
• One in eight women will
be diagnosed with breast cancer in
their lifetime.
• Although breast cancer in men is
rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be
diagnosed with breast cancer and
approximately 410 will die each year.
4. Breast Cancer in the U.S.
• Breast cancer is the most commonly
diagnosed cancer in women
• Each year it is estimated that over
220,000 women in the United States
will be diagnosed with breast cancer
and more than 40,000 will die.
5. Global Outlook
• breast cancer is the most common
cancer among women worldwide
• hundreds of thousands of women
each year are affected in countries at
all levels of modernization.
6. Good News about Breast
Cancer
• Death rates from breast cancer have
been declining since about 1990, in
part to better due to screening
and early detection, increased
awareness, and continually
improving treatment options.
7. Should We Try Harder?
• Majority of the funding goes to
science aimed at treating the
disease.
• Five percent goes to prevention
efforts.
8. Try Harder Cont’d
• Mortality rates plummeted in the 1990s,
when mammograms first became widely
used, they’ve declined less than 3 percent
a year since then.
• Researchers get funding and tenure by
publishing papers, not looking for a cure.
9. Always Stay Aware
• Even with the lowered rates of breast
cancer, always stay aware of your
body.
• A breast self exam is a check-up a
woman does at home.
10. Breast Self Exam Cont’d
• The best time to do a self breast exam
is about 3 - 5 days after your period starts
• Your breasts are not as tender or lumpy at
this time in your monthly cycle.
• If you have gone through menopause, do
your exam on the same day every month.
11. How to Do Self Checks
• Place your right hand behind your head. With the
middle fingers of your left hand, gently yet firmly
press down using small motions to examine the
entire right breast.
• Next, sit or stand. Feel your armpit, because
breast tissue goes into that area.
• Gently squeeze the nipple, checking for
discharge. Repeat the process on the left breast.
• Use one of the patterns shown in the diagram to
make sure that you are covering all of the breast
tissue.
12. How-to Cont’d
• Look at your breasts directly and in the
mirror. Look for changes in skin texture,
such as dimpling, puckering, indentations,
or skin that looks like an orange peel.
• Also note the shape and outline of each
breast.
• Check to see if the nipple turns inward.
