Animals and Climate - How Wildlife Adapts to Weather Changes
1. WEATHER, CLIMATE AND ADAPTATIONS OF ANIMALS TO
CLIMATE
CLASS: VII
NCERT SYLLABUS
MANJU LIJU
2. WEATHER HAS A PROFOUND EFFECT ON OUR
LIVES...
The Earth has endured ice ages, droughts,
extreme storms, and flooding. We have
learned that global and regional climate
changes can affect local weather
patterns across the world. ... Wherever it
happens, extreme weather can cause illness
and death as well as damage to crops,
property, animal habitats, and economies.
3. WHAT IS WEATHER?
The day to day condition of the atmosphere at a place with
respect to the temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind-speed, etc.
is called the weather at that place.
5. SEASONS
In the summer season,
the position of the place
is closer to the sun and
hence it receives
sunlight for longer hours
while in the winter
season the position of a
place is farther to the
sun and hence, it
receives sunlight for
shorter hours.
6. UPDATING THE WEATHER ON DAILY BASIS IS VERY
IMPORTANT TO PLAN OUR ACTIVITIES
• On an everyday
basis, many use weather forecasts to
determine what to wear on a given
day. Since outdoor activities are
severely curtailed by heavy rain,
snow and wind chill, forecasts can be
used to plan activities around these
events, and to plan ahead and
survive them.
7. WEATHER REPORT
The weather report of a
place always includes the
minimum and maximum
temperatures of the day
which are measured using
a minimum-maximum
thermometer. The
minimum temperature can
be experienced in the
morning time while the
maximum temperature is
experienced in the
afternoon.
8. H. W ACTIVITY: 1
Take a cut out of the weather
reports of last week and
copy/stick on the note book.
9. HYGROMETER
• A hygrometer is an instrument
used to measure relative humidity.
Humidity is the measure of the
amount of moisture in the air.
10. RAIN GUAGE IS THE INSTRUMENT TO MEASURE THE RATE
OF RAIN FALL.
HEAVY RAINFALL
11. ANEMOMETER
• An anemometer is an
instrument that measures wind
speed and wind
pressure. Anemometers are
important tools for
meteorologists, who study
weather patterns. They are
also important to the work of
physicists, who study the way
air moves.
13. •
HOW DOES WEATHER PATTERN AT A PLACE HELP TO
DETERMINE THE CLIMATE?
The records of weather have been
preserved for the past several decades
which help us to determine the weather
pattern at a place.
THE AVERAGE WEATHER PATTERN TAKEN OVER LONG TIME, SAY 25 YEARS, IS CALLED
THE CLIMATE OF THE PLACE
14. LET’S OBSERVE THE WEATHER PATTERN OF SRINAGAR AND KERALA AND IDENTIFY THE
CLIMATE OF THE PLACES
ACTIVITY TIME!
15. LET’S FRAME THE CONCLUSION!
TEMPERATURE RAINFALL CLIMATE
HIGH MOST OF THE TIME HEAVY HOT & WET
HOT & WET
MODERATELY cold & WET FOR A PART OF
THE YEAR.
19. Climate has a
profound effect on
living organisms
Any change in the climate of an area
can affect the plants and
animals living there, as well the entire
ecosystem. Some species are already
responding to a warmer climate by
moving to cooler
locations. Climate change also alters the
life cycles of plants and animals.
21. NO PERMANENT RESIDENTS IN ANTARCTICA
• The people who travel to
or live in Antarctica fall into two
main groups, those who live and
work on scientific research
stations or bases, and tourists.
No-one lives in Antarctica
indefinitely in the way that
they do in the rest of the world. It
has no commercial industries, no
towns or cities, no permanent
residents.

MIGRATORY BIRDS

31. TOUCAN IS ADAPTED TO GET ITS FOOD THAT IS NOT EASILY
REACHABLE BY OTHER ANIMALS

33. The beard ape
rarely comes
down on the
ground since it is
able to get
sufficient food on
the trees.
34. • Long ears help to hear the
soft sound. It also help to get
protected from the hot and
humid weather.
• Tusks (Modified teeth) Help to
tear the tree barks.
• Trunk helps to get the strong
smell and uses as the nose.
