3. We are supporting and raising standards
Recognised, research-based standards and
qualifications, along with our project
work, provide benefits to employers and
stakeholders, such as:
Providing the workforce with externally recognised
credibility and esteem
Helping to define and develop:
> Job roles, responsibilities and competencies
> Organisational procedures
Providing strategic guidance for:
> Leadership and management
> HR and staff development
> Recruitment and retention
4. We are supporting and raising standards
Recognised, research-based standards and
qualifications, along with our project
work, provide benefits to employers and
stakeholders, such as:
Providing the latest research to support workforce
planning
Reassuring learners about the quality of their
qualifications
We also help different areas of the workforce to work
effectively together. For example, by running recruitment
and retention campaigns and providing a free
information and advice service.
5. We are supporting and raising standards
There is a growing expectation that the lifelong learning
workforce will adapt to the skills demands of the wider
workforce. Engagement from you, as employers and
stakeholders, is vital so that we can continue to
contribute to your objectives.

7. A world class lifelong learning workforce
Recognised qualifications, based on National
Occupational Standards, provide benefits to those
who deliver and support lifelong learning:
You have the currency and credibility with which to
improve your career prospects
You have proof of the career stage you're at, and that
your skills are relevant. For instance, that you are
up-to-date with new learning technologies
Your skills are transferable to other areas of the
lifelong learning workforce and also across the UK
8. A world class lifelong learning workforce
Standards and qualifications support an individual’s career
journey and professional development. As the skills
landscape is rapidly evolving, so job roles change and
everyone needs to upskill. It is critical that the lifelong
learning workforce has the right skills, as they are
responsible for upskilling all other industries.
9. A world class All workforces
lifelong learning better skilled and
workforce equipped
10. All workforces better skilled and equipped
Benefits to the larger UK workforce include:
Improving the skills of other workforces increases their
productivity
Equality of opportunity for learners wherever they live
in the UK
Learners have reassurance and confidence that
they’re in good hands when their learning providers
have recognised qualifications
Attracting and retaining the best people regardless of
what group they come from
11. All workforces better skilled and equipped
All other workforces rely on the lifelong learning workforce to
upskill their own industries. Having a world class lifelong
learning workforce enables the larger UK workforce to
become world class.
12. All workforces A more inclusive
better skilled and and prosperous
equipped society
13. A more inclusive and prosperous society
A standards-based learning environment supports
better life choices for the individual, which can
lead to:
Individual development and self-esteem
Better employment opportunities and higher earning
potential
Improved social cohesion and stronger communities
Lower unemployment
Improved quality of life
14. A more inclusive and prosperous society
Each area of our workforce has a positive impact on
lives, and in turn on the UK marketplace. This means
taxpayers' investment in lifelong learning attracts a
good return.
'Every young person has their own story, and we try
to unlock it.' Adam Purvis (head of Fairbridge
charity), The Guardian, 2008
15. A more inclusive and prosperous society
The lifelong learning workforce is critical in economic terms
because it underpins the success of all other workforces.
There is a direct link between skills, productivity and growth
— meaning that lifelong learning is a catalyst for a better
society. We need a highly skilled UK workforce to remain
competitive in the global economy.

17. Lifelong learning is...
For us, it is learning that happens outside of the
school environment. This might be learning new
work skills, or updating existing skills as job
requirements change. Or it might be the
inspiration people find at a youth group, or the
opportunity for learning at a local library.
18. The lifelong learning workforce
Our workforce includes 1.2 million people who are
involved in the delivery of lifelong learning, as well
as those who support that delivery.
Investment in our workforce is critical to the
success of all other workforces and our society.
Lifelong learning is a priority sector — and a
career in the lifelong learning sector is an exciting
and rewarding one.
19. The lifelong learning workforce
The lifelong learning workforce is spread
across five interrelated areas:
1. Community learning and development
2. Further education
3. Higher education
4. Libraries, archives and information services
5. Work based learning

21. We are Lifelong Learning UK
We’re an employer-led body with one agenda —
to ensure the lifelong learning workforce is the
best it can be. We understand that having a world
class lifelong learning workforce is pivotal to
having a world class UK workforce. We enable
collaboration across the lifelong learning sector to
achieve this.
We are one of 25 Sector Skills Councils, and we
are responsible for supporting the lifelong learning
workforce by: developing and raising standards;
providing labour market intelligence; engaging
employers; and delivering innovative projects.
22. What we do
Labour Market Intelligence: This research
means we can compare current skills against the
future needs of the workforce, and identify skills
gaps and requirements.
National Occupational Standards: We develop
these standards based on our research and
consultation with the sector. We are the
recognised authority for developing these
standards in the sector.
23. What we do
Support professional qualifications: In turn, these
standards inform the development of recognised
professional qualifications.
Information and Advice Service: This is a free
advice service for anyone who is involved in, or
interested in, lifelong learning. It is run by
experienced practitioners, and is accessible by
phone (020 7936 5798), by email
(advice@lluk.org), on our website and at events.
24. What we do
Supporting literature we produce includes:
Research, standards, qualifications
framework, case studies highlighting individuals
and career maps illustrating skills transferability.
Project work: We tender for, manage, deliver and
evaluate a wide range of projects, initiatives and
products that support workforce development.
25. What we do
Standards Verification UK: Our trading
subsidiary, Standards Verification UK, is
responsible for the verification of initial teacher
training as well as other forms of workforce
training and development.

26. How we do it
We listen to employer needs and represent them
to government and funding bodies. We
collaborate with and monitor all areas of the
workforce to represent and respond to workforce
demands and develop effective strategies.
We recognise the different needs, legislations and
policies of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland
and Wales. By sharing best practice we strive for
qualifications that are recognised across all four
nations. We promote equality and diversity, and
demonstrate this in the way we work.
