• Writer, poet, critic, dramatist, mentor, scholar, political prisoner, activist. Dr. Bienvenido L.
Lumbera, National Artist for Literature, was all this and more.
• Born in Lipa, Batangas, on April 11, 1932, to Timoteo and Carmen Lumbera.
• Young Bienvenido was orphaned at an early age.
• Lipa Elementary School and finished high school at Mabini Academy
• His activism was so well-known that when Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in 1972,
Lumbera knew he was among those targeted for arrest and was forced underground. He was
arrested in January 1974, and released a year later after Cynthia Nograles, his former student at
Ateneo de Manila University, appealed for his release. The two were married a few months later.

• Lumbera is known for his poetry that often explores themes related to Filipino identity, culture,
and social issues. His poems are characterized by their deep insight into the Filipino experience
and their poignant use of language.
• One of his well-known collections of poetry is "Likhang Dila, Likhang Diwa" (1985), which
showcases his mastery of the Filipino language and his ability to convey complex emotions and
ideas through verse.

• Nick Joaquin, byname of Nicomedes Joaquin, (born May 4, 1917, Paco, Manila,
Philippines—died April 29, 2004, San Juan), Filipino novelist, poet,
playwright, essayist, and biographer whose works present the diverse heritage
of the Filipino people.
• Joaquin was awarded a scholarship to the Dominican monastery in Hong
Kong after publication of his essay “La Naval de Manila” (1943), a description
of Manila’s fabled resistance to 17th-century Dutch invaders. After World War
II he traveled to the United States, Mexico, and Spain, later serving as a
cultural representative of the Philippines to Taiwan, Cuba, and China.

Joaquin
May 4, 1917-pril 29, 2004
• Starting as a proofreader for the Philippines Free Press, Joaquin rose to
contributing editor and essayist under the nom de plume “Quijano de
Manila” (“Manila Old-Timer”). He was well known as a historian of the brief
Golden Age of Spain in the Philippines, as a writer of short stories suffused
with folk Roman Catholicism, as a playwright, and as a novelist. Joaquin wrote
his works in English.
• The Aquinos of Tarlac: An Essay on History as Three Generations (1983)
presents a biography of Benigno Aquino, the assassinated presidential
candidate.
• The action of the novel Cave and Shadows (1983) occurs in the period of
martial law under Ferdinand Marcos.
18. JULY 13, 1924 – MAY 23, 2011
• Alejandro Roces was a short story writer and essayist, and was considered as
the country’s best writer of comic short stories. He was known for his widely
anthologized “My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken.”
• In his innumerable newspaper columns, he had always focused on the
neglected aspects of the Filipino cultural heritage. His works have been
published in various international magazines and has received national and
international awards.
• Ever the champion of Filipino cultures, Roces brought to public attention the
aesthetics of the country’s fiestas. He was instrumental in popularizing several
local fiestas, notably, Moriones and Ati-atihan

• He personally led the campaign to change the country’s Independence Day
from July 4 to June 12, and caused the change of language from English to
Filipino in the country’s stamps, currency and passports, and recovered Jose
Rizal’s manuscripts when they were stolen from the National Archives.
• His unflinching love of country led him to become a guerilla during the
Second World War, to defy martial law and to found the major opposition
party under the dictatorship. His works have been published in various
international magazines and received numerous national and international
awards, including several decorations from various governments.
