Plants can make food because they have a
green substances called chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is found mostly in the leaves. It is
found in the chloroplasts of plant cells.

Photosynthesis
photo synthesis
light to make / put together
process by which plants make food using light,
carbon dioxide and water.
It can take place in any part of a plant that contain
chloroplasts.

The Process of Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide is taken in by the plant through tiny
openings/stomata on its leaves.
Water is absorbed by the roots and transported to the
leaves and other parts of the plant.
Light is trapped by the chlorophyll in the leaves.
Sugar is produced in the leaves and transported to
other parts of the plant. Plants use the energy in the
sugar to stay alive. Excess sugar is converted to
starch for storage in plant parts, such as leaves,
stems, roots and seeds.

Oxygen is also produced and given out by the plant
through the tiny openings/stomata on its leaves to
the surroundings.
The process of photosynthesis can be summarized by
the following equation:
Carbon dioxide + Water Sugar + Oxygen
light energy trapped
by chlorophyll

Respiration
Respiration is a process in which oxygen and sugar
are changed into energy, carbon dioxide and
water.
Sugar + Oxygen Energy + Carbon dioxide + Water
Unwanted carbon dioxide and water are removed
when living things breathe out.

Differences between photosynthesis and
respiration in plants
Photosynthesis and respiration involve different chemical process, but they
make use of each other’s product.
The table below compares photosynthesis and respiration.
Photosynthesis Respiration
Energy is stored. Energy is released.
Carbon dioxide and water are used, while
oxygen is released.
Oxygen is used, while carbon dioxide and
water released.
It takes place only in cells that contain
chlorophyll and in the presence of
sunlight or light.
It takes place in all living cells at all times.

When we eat, our bodies transform the food into
energy to do work. When we run or walk or do work,
we ‘burn’ the food in our bodies to produce energy.
Human (like all other animals) get their energy from
the food they eat.
Animals either eat plants or eat those animals that
feed on plants.
The Sun is the primary source of energy on Earth.
