Energy What Every 5th Grader Should Know

 1. 1. Energy

Energy is all around us.

 2. 2. Here are forms of energy every 5 th grader needs to know:

H e K eeps E ating L ightly

S alted P otato C hips

*Heat *Kinetic *Electrical

*Light *Sound *Potential *Chemical

 3. 3. ENERGY Electrical Energy Heat Energy Light Energy Kinetic (Motion) Energy Sound Energy Chemical Energy Potential Energy
 4. 4. Heat Energy

This energy is produced in many ways such as burning, rubbing, or mixing one substance with another. Heat energy flows from warmer objects to cooler ones until both reach the same temperature.

 5. 5. Kinetic Energy

Energy of Motion : This is the energy of an object which results from its motion.

 6. 6. Electrical Energy

The energy associated with electric charges and their movements. For example, circuits provide a means of transferring electrical energy.

 7. 7. Light Energy

This energy travels in a straight line until it strikes an object. Light can be reflected by a mirror or lens or absorbed by an object.

 8. 8. Sound Energy

This is the energy produced by making things vibrate. Sound energy is transferred through the air from a source to an observer.

 9. 9. Potential Energy

Stored energy determined by an object’s position.

An apple waiting to fall

A ball at the top of a ramp

A stretched out rubber band

 10. 10. Chemical Energy

The energy stored in matter. Energy can be released or consumed during a chemical reaction such as:

batteries

food we eat

wood that is burning

 11. 11. Energy Changes

The process of transferring energy from one object to another.

Transfer = the same form of energy moving from one object to another

 12. 12.

Examples of Energy Transfers

 13. 13. Energy Transfer Energy Form = Where to Where ? ice hands HEAT
 14. 14. Energy Transfer Energy Form = Where to Where ? wheels legs KINETIC
 15. 15. Energy Transfer Energy Form = Where to Where ? appliance (TV, computer, etc) outlet ELECTRICAL
 16. 16. Energy Transfer Energy Form = Where to Where ? eye mirror LIGHT
 17. 17. Energy Transfer Energy Form = Where to Where ? ear drum SOUND
 18. 18. Energy Transfer Energy Form = Where to Where ? CHEMICAL Fly (food) Frog (growth)
 19. 19. Energy Can Be Transformed

Transformation = converting one form of energy to another form of energy

An electric blanket transforms electricity to heat. Then, the blanket transfers heat to our body.

 20. 20. Energy Can Be Transformed Electrical energy is transferred from the wall socket to the computer. Electrical energy is transformed to sound and light energy when the computer is turned on. Electrical energy is transformed to heat energy when the computer stays on.
 21. 21. Energy Can Be Transformed Electrical energy is transferred from the wall socket to the curling iron. Electrical energy is transformed to heat energy when the curling iron stays on. Heat energy is transferred to the hair that is being curled.
 22. 22. Energy Can Be Transformed Light energy from the sun is transformed to chemical energy as the plants grow. Chemical energy is transformed to heat and kinetic energy as the panda eats the bamboo leaves.
 23. 23. Energy Can Be Transformed The apple on the tree has potential energy due to its position. Potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy as the apple falls and hits the man’s head.
 24. 24. Energy Can Be Transformed Gasoline is a chemical energy. When gasoline is transferred into the car, a transformation occurs. Transformations within this system include: Heat energy Electrical energy Sound energy Kinetic energy Light energy
