3. 2 Samuel 12:1-3 ESV
Nathan Confronts
And the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to
him and said to him, “There were two men in a
certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2
The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3
but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe
lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it
up, and it grew up with him and with his
children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink
from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like
a daughter to him.
4. 2 Samuel 12:4 ESV
Nathan Confronts
4 Now there came a traveler to the rich
man, and he was unwilling to take one of his
own flock or herd to prepare for the guest
who had come to him, but he took the poor
man's lamb and prepared it for the man who
had come to him.”
5. 2 Samuel 12:5-6
David Judges
5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled
against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As
the Lord lives, the man who has done this
deserves to die, 6 and he shall restore the
lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and
because he had no pity.”
6. 2 Samuel 12:7-9
God Punishes
7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says
the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over
Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8
And I gave you your master's house and your master's
wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel
and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to
you as much more. 9 Why have you despised the word
of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have
struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have
taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with
the sword of the Ammonites.
7. 2 Samuel 12:10-12
God Punishes
Now therefore the sword shall never depart from
your house, because you have despised me and
have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your
wife.’ 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise
up evil against you out of your own house. And I
will take your wives before your eyes and give
them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your
wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you did it
secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and
before the sun.’”
8. 2 Samuel 12:13-14
God Punishes
3 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned
against the Lord.” And Nathan said to
David, “The Lord also has put away your
sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless,
because by this deed you have utterly
scorned the Lord, the child who is born to
you shall die.”

12. Perspective/Root Cause
2 Samuel 11:1-2 (ESV)
1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go
out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with
him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites
and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at
Jerusalem. 2 It happened, late one afternoon, when
David arose from his couch and was walking on the
roof of the king's house, that he saw from the roof a
woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.

Editor's Notes
What is the key to the story here? Not about all the other things going on…all about David and his sin…
Where should he be?
Alignment-Assignment-Execution
Are you putting yourself in position to even understand what is going on?
If you are living outside of God’s will…you are going to experience frustration, simple as that.
Foundational lie: God is holding out on me.
Starts in the garden…all of this vs. 1 tree
Have to believe this if you are going to find hope in the Bible…
Football: Could you imagine how crazy the game would be if there were no boundaries?
Have you ever driven in Mexico? There is a certain freedom that comes from having laws that you can understand :-). I can have a conversation with Susan because I am not worried about someone ramming into me.
- Most o the time David who is the King, is sending people out…this time God sends Nathan to David.
If you are not lined up with God and spending time in Biblical Community you will never be able to see sin for what it really is…
If you answer is time, it’s probably because you are working too much because of everything on this list :-).
Should not be your wife…
Have to give them permission and act like you mean it…cannot bite their head off when they tell you the truth or it won’t happen again.
Will save you time in the long run…have to get stuff out of your head to see what it really looks like…
This is where I am struggling right now…I am a grumbling machine because I am not spending enough time with God’s Word and His people to get me going…
If you are not lined up with God and spending time in Biblical Community you will never be able to see sin for what it really is…
The “I’s” my beautiful wife talked about last week…
Big things that God did…
When you lose sight of who God is, you lose sight of what sin is, simple as that…
Take your eyes off of God and put them on yourself…
Again, foundational lie here…God is holding out on you…
Grumbling and murmuring is the root cause of all that I am dealing with now because it puts me in position to blow up at people instead of loving them in a way that points them to God.
Be angry and do not sin…

If you do not model this for your kids, you are asking for trouble.
Who are you investing in that is going to hold your kids accountable when they don’t want to come to you?
- Turning from sin to what?
Grumbler:
Philippians 2:14-16 (ESV Strong's) 14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
