Introduction
•King David has established Jerusalem as the center for
government and worship.
•King David has brought the Ark of the Covenant to
Jerusalem and placed it in the tabernacle (tent).
•King David has re-established worship in the
tabernacle in Jerusalem.
•The neighboring enemies of Israel are not attacking.
Approach to Lesson on 2 Samuel 7:1-17
•Read through scriptures and look at details.
•Look at the 5 Unconditional Covenants made by God
in Biblical history.
•Focus on the covenant made with David in 2 Samuel 7.
•Discuss how the covenants relate to each other and
why all of this is important to believers.
A Bird’s Eye View of the Davidic Covenant
2 Samuel 7:1-3 NKJV
1 Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his
house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his
enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the
prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the
ark of God dwells inside tent curtains."
3 Then Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in
your heart, for the Lord is with you."
•Nathan answers before consulting God.
Nathan the Prophet
•This is the 1st introduction to Nathan the prophet.
•The name Nathan means “gift.”
•Prophets were considered the spokespersons for God.
•David consulted Nathan about God’s directions in
building a Temple (house of cedar).
•David had “inquired of the Lord” in the past through
other prophets and possibly directly.
2 Samuel 7:4-6 NKJV
4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord
came to Nathan, saying, 5 "Go and tell My servant
David, 'Thus says the Lord: "Would you build a house
for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house
since the time that I brought the children of Israel up
from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a
tent and in a tabernacle.
2 Samuel 7:7 NKJV
7 Wherever I have moved about with all the children of
Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the
tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My
people Israel, saying, 'Why have you not built Me a
house of cedar? ' " '
•David misunderstood the Lord’s priorities in thinking
that the “house” was more important than David
being a shepherd to the Lord’s people.
Why did David not build the “Lord’s House”?
1 Chronicles 22:6-8 NKJV
6 Then he called for his son Solomon, and charged him
to build a house for the Lord God of Israel. 7 And David
said to Solomon: "My son, as for me, it was in my mind
to build a house to the name of the Lord my God; 8 but
the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 'You have
shed much blood and have made great wars; you shall
not build a house for My name, because you have shed
much blood on the earth in My sight.
As we read 2 Samuel 7:8-17, listen for the promises
being made to David by God.
2 Samuel 7:8-9 NKJV
8 "Now therefore, thus shall you (Nathan) say to My
servant David, "Thus says the Lord of hosts: 'I took you
from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be
ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have been
with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all
your enemies from before you, and have made you a
great name, like the name of the great men who are on
the earth.
2 Samuel 7:10-11 NKJV
10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel,
and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of
their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of
wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11
since the time that I commanded judges to be over My
people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your
enemies. Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a
house.
2 Samuel 7:12-13 NKJV
12 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your
fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come
from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He
shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the
throne of his kingdom forever.
2 Samuel 7:14-15 NKJV
14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he
commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men
and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy
shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom
I removed from before you.
2 Samuel 7:16-17 NKJV
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be
established forever before you. Your throne shall be
established forever." ' "
17 According to all these words and according to all this
vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
God Made 5 Irrevocable, Unconditional
Covenants in the Bible.
•Irrevocable = not able to be changed, reversed or
recovered.
•Unconditional = not subject to any conditions such as
obedience, faithfulness, etc.
•Covenant = a pledge, promise, contract or agreement.
5 Irrevocable, Unconditional Covenants Made
by God:
1. Noahic Covenant – Genesis 9:8-17
2. Abrahamic Covenant – Genesis 15:12-21
3. Levitical (Priestly) Covenant – Numbers 3:1-18
4. Davidic Covenant – 2 Samuel 7:1-17
5. New Covenant (Redemption) – Jeremiah 31:31-34
1. Noahic Covenant
Genesis 9:11-13 NKJV
11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall
all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again
shall there be a flood to destroy the earth."
12 And God said: "This is the sign of the covenant which I
make between Me and you, and every living creature that is
with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set My rainbow in
the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant
between Me and the earth.
Noahic Covenant and Sign
2. Abrahamic Covenant
Genesis 12:1-3 NKJV
1 Now the LORD had said to Abram:
"Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
2 I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
• Features: (1) Land, (2) Descendants, (3) Blessing & Redemption.
• Sign: Circumcision (Genesis 17:9-14).
2. Abrahamic Covenant
• Genesis 17:9-14 NKJV
9 And God said to Abraham: "As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you
and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My
covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants
after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall
be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the
covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you shall
be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in
your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your
descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with
your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh
for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is
not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from
his people; he has broken My covenant."
• Sign: Circumcision.
3. Levitical (Priestly) Covenant
Numbers 25:10-11 NKJV
10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 11 "Phinehas
the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has
turned back My wrath from the children of Israel,
because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so
that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal.
3. Levitical (Priestly) Covenant
Numbers 25:12-13 NKJV
12 Therefore say, 'Behold, I give to him My covenant of
peace; 13 and it shall be to him and his descendants
after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood,
because he was zealous for his God, and made
atonement for the children of Israel.' "
•All future legitimate High Priests come through
Phinehas’ family line.
4. Davidic Covenant
2 Samuel 7:8-11 NKJV
8 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says
the LORD of hosts: "I took you from the sheepfold, from following
the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have
been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your
enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like
the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I
will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that
they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor
shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously,
11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people
Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the
LORD tells you that He will make you a house.
4. Davidic Covenant
2 Samuel 7:12-16 NKJV
12 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your
fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from
your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a
house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his
kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My
son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of
men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy
shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I
removed from before you. 16 And your house and your
kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your
throne shall be established forever." ' "
4. Davidic Covenant
A. Promises realized in David’s lifetime (2 Samuel 8-11a).
1. Gave David “a great name.”
a. Also promised this to Abraham.
2. Appointed a place for Israel – “Promised Land.”
a. Also in Mosaic and Abrahamic Covenants
3. Gave David “rest” from his enemies.
B. Promises fulfilled after David’s death (2 Samuel 11b-16).
1. A son to sit on his national throne (Solomon).
2. A Son who would rule a kingdom that will be established
forever (Messiah).
a. David’s throne did not exist during Jesus’ time on earth.
b. Jesus will sit on David’s throne during the Millennial
Reign.
The Davidic Covenant Confirmed in Psalms
• Psalm 89:3-4 NIV
3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant,
4 'I will establish your line forever
and make your throne firm through all generations.’”
• Psalm 132:11 NIV
11 The Lord swore an oath to David,
a sure oath he will not revoke:
"One of your own descendants
I will place on your throne.
5. The New Covenant (Redemption)
Jeremiah 31:31-34 NKJV
31 "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not
according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that
I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My
covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the
LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and
write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My
people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man
his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from
the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will
forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."
Translation of the “New Covenant”
•An unconditional divine promise to unfaithful Israel to
forgive its sins and establish his relationship on a new
basis by writing his law “on their hearts” – a covenant
of pure grace.
•Matthew 26:27-28 NKJV
27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it
to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is
My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for
many for the remission of sins."
How do these Covenants all fit together?
1. God has a plan for man and for history that was
activated with creation and man’s sin.
2. One-way God reveals himself to man is through
covenants (promises) he makes with man.
3. The Noahic Covenant is that man will not be
completely destroyed by a flood.
How do these Covenants all fit together?
4. The Abrahamic Covenant identified God’s chosen
people and promised them a place on earth with
descendants, blessings and redemption.
5. The Davidic Covenant identified the direct lineage
from God’s chosen people that would provide the
Messiah for man.
6. The New Covenant was sealed with the blood of
the Messiah and the covenant of grace not works.
What is God’s plan for history?
•God’s plan for history is to unite all things in Christ.
•Ephesians 1:8b-10 NIV
8b With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he made
known to us the mystery of his will according to his
good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be
put into effect when the times reach their
fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and
on earth under Christ.
Why unite all things under Christ?
•Colossians 1:15-17 NIV
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the
firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were
created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or
authorities; all things have been created through him
and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all
things hold together.
Why unite all things under Christ?
•Colossians 1:18-20 NIV
18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the
beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so
that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For
God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things,
whether things on earth or things in heaven, by
making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
How do these covenants apply to the future?
•A Pre-millennial View of Christ’s 1000 years reign on
earth.
•After the Tribulation, Christ and the Church will return
to earth to reign for 1000 years (Millennial Kingdom).
•Isaiah 65:20-25 & Revelation 20:2-7.
•The covenants have details and promises about the
Millennial Kingdom.
The Return of Christ to Rule (Dr. Chuck Missler)
•1,845 references in the Old Testament.
•318 references in the New Testament.
•For every prophecy of Christ’s 1st coming, there are 8
of His 2nd coming.
Millennial Kingdom in Abrahamic Covenant
1. Israel as a nation will possess the totality of the
land promised to Abraham and envisioned by
Ezekiel (Ezekiel 20:33-42; 36:1-37:28).
2. Israel as a nation will be converted, forgiven and
restored (Romans 11:25-27).
3. Israel will repent and receive forgiveness of God in
the future (Zechariah 12:10-14).
The Davidic Covenant and the Reign of Christ
•2 Samuel 7:16 NKJV
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be
established forever before you. Your throne shall be
established forever." ' "
•David’s house and kingdom will be established
forever as Christ reigns on the throne during the
Millennium and into Eternity.
Millennial Kingdom in Davidic Covenant
• Isaiah 9:6-7 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Millennial Kingdom in Davidic Covenant
• Jeremiah 33:15-17 NIV
15 "'In those days and at that time
I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David's line;
he will do what is just and right in the land.
16 In those days Judah will be saved
and Jerusalem will live in safety.
This is the name by which it will be called:
The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’
17 For this is what the Lord says: 'David will never fail to have a man to sit on
the throne of Israel,
Millennial Kingdom in Davidic Covenant
•Luke 1:30-33 NKJV
30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you
will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and
shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will
be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will
give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will
reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His
kingdom there will be no end."
Old Testament Challenges in Church History
•Marcionism – (1st Century) The Old Testament is not
authoritative in matters of Christian doctrine and
morals.
•Origen – (3rd Century) Established an extreme pattern
of allegorizing Old Testament Scripture.
•Augustine – (4th Century) Allegorizing scripture to the
point where millennial reign of Christ was not
believed or taught.
Challenges in 2018?
•Most Protestant Denominations do not have a pre-
millennial view of Christ’s reign.
•Sermon by well-known pastor in February 2018 – He
said that while he believes that the Old Testament is
divinely inspired, it is not the basis of Christianity. Just
as Peter, James and Paul elected to “unhitch their faith
from the Jewish scriptures”, … we must as well.
Jesus did not see Old Testament scriptures this
way!
•Luke 24:44-45 NKJV
44 Then He said to them, "These are the words which I
spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things
must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of
Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning
Me." 45 And He opened their understanding, that they
might comprehend the Scriptures.
Closing Scripture
•Matthew 5:17-18 NIV
17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or
the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to
fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and
earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least
stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the
Law until everything is accomplished."

The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
John 3:16 NKJV
16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
everlasting life.”
John 14:6 NKJV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through Me.”
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Romans 3:23 NKJV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23a NKJV
23a For the wages of sin is death,
• Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.
• Even Jesus, the only one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life
to pay the penalty for our sin.
• The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the “second death”
explained in Revelation 21:8.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Revelation 21:8 NKJV
8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers,
sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have
their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone,
which is the second death.”
Romans 5:8 NKJV
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while
we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Romans 6:23b NKJV
23b but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Revelation 21:7 NKJV
7 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his
God and he shall be My son.”
• Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be overcomers.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Romans 10:9-10 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and
believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto
righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto
salvation.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

  • 13. 2 Samuel 7:1-3 NKJV 1 Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains." 3 Then Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you." •Nathan answers before consulting God.
  • 14. Nathan the Prophet •This is the 1st introduction to Nathan the prophet. •The name Nathan means “gift.” •Prophets were considered the spokespersons for God. •David consulted Nathan about God’s directions in building a Temple (house of cedar). •David had “inquired of the Lord” in the past through other prophets and possibly directly.
  • 15. 2 Samuel 7:4-6 NKJV 4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 "Go and tell My servant David, 'Thus says the Lord: "Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle.
  • 16. 2 Samuel 7:7 NKJV 7 Wherever I have moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, 'Why have you not built Me a house of cedar? ' " ' •David misunderstood the Lord’s priorities in thinking that the “house” was more important than David being a shepherd to the Lord’s people.
  • 17. Why did David not build the “Lord’s House”? 1 Chronicles 22:6-8 NKJV 6 Then he called for his son Solomon, and charged him to build a house for the Lord God of Israel. 7 And David said to Solomon: "My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build a house to the name of the Lord my God; 8 but the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 'You have shed much blood and have made great wars; you shall not build a house for My name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in My sight.

  • 20. 2 Samuel 7:10-11 NKJV 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a house.
  • 21. 2 Samuel 7:12-13 NKJV 12 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
  • 22. 2 Samuel 7:14-15 NKJV 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
  • 23. 2 Samuel 7:16-17 NKJV 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever." ' " 17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."

  • 42. Why unite all things under Christ? •Colossians 1:18-20 NIV 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

  • 52. Old Testament Challenges in Church History •Marcionism – (1st Century) The Old Testament is not authoritative in matters of Christian doctrine and morals. •Origen – (3rd Century) Established an extreme pattern of allegorizing Old Testament Scripture. •Augustine – (4th Century) Allegorizing scripture to the point where millennial reign of Christ was not believed or taught.
  • 53. Challenges in 2018? •Most Protestant Denominations do not have a pre- millennial view of Christ’s reign. •Sermon by well-known pastor in February 2018 – He said that while he believes that the Old Testament is divinely inspired, it is not the basis of Christianity. Just as Peter, James and Paul elected to “unhitch their faith from the Jewish scriptures”, … we must as well.
  • 54. Jesus did not see Old Testament scriptures this way! •Luke 24:44-45 NKJV 44 Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." 45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
  • 55. Closing Scripture •Matthew 5:17-18 NIV 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."

  • 58. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: Romans 3:23 NKJV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 6:23a NKJV 23a For the wages of sin is death, • Death in this life (the first death) is 100%. • Even Jesus, the only one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay the penalty for our sin. • The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the “second death” explained in Revelation 21:8.
  • 59. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: Revelation 21:8 NKJV 8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Romans 5:8 NKJV 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  • 60. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: Romans 6:23b NKJV 23b but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Revelation 21:7 NKJV 7 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.” • Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be overcomers.
