This week we begin a study of the life of David. As we begin, we start with the nation of Israel in a colossal mess, and David as a mere shepherd boy. How will be become king? Along the way, we'll see some delectable pictures of Christ, in David.

Jeremiah 23:5 "The days are coming," declares the LORD,
"when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King
who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the
land.

9. ISRAEL'S HISTORICAL CONTEXT
1 Samuel 10:17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to
the LORD at Mizpah 18 and said to them, "This is what the
LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I brought Israel up out of
Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all
the kingdoms that oppressed you.'
10. MESSIANIC TYPOLOGY
1 Samuel 10:19 But you have now rejected your God,
who saves you out of all your calamities and distresses. And

yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans."
11. ISRAEL'S HISTORICAL CONTEXT
1 Samuel 15:22 But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD
delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in
obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than
sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
12. ISRAEL'S HISTORICAL CONTEXT
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance
like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the
word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king."
13. THE YOUNG DAVID APPEARS ON THE SCENE
1 Samuel 16:1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will
you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over
Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am
sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of
his sons to be king."
14. THE YOUNG DAVID APPEARS ON THE SCENE
1 Samuel 16:6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and
thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed stands here before
the LORD."
15. FOUR GREAT TYPES OF THE COMING MESSIAH
1. The heart
1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look
on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I
have rejected him; for the LORD sees not as man sees; man
looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on
the heart."
16. FOUR GREAT TYPES OF THE COMING MESSIAH
1 Samuel 16:12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was
ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then
the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one."
17. FOUR GREAT TYPES OF THE COMING MESSIAH
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the
presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of
the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to
Ramah.
18. FOUR GREAT TYPES OF THE COMING MESSIAH
2. From lowliest of positions to the highest

servant David, `Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you
from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should
be prince over my people Israel;
19. FOUR GREAT TYPES OF THE COMING MESSIAH
Luke 2:15 When the angels had left them and gone into
heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to
Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the
Lord has told us about."

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the
baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen
him, they spread the word concerning what had been told
them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed
at what the shepherds said to them.
21. FOUR GREAT TYPES OF THE COMING MESSIAH
19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them
in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and
praising God for all the things they had heard and seen,
which were just as they had been told.

because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to
the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to

darkness for the prisoners…
