6. eWaste Insight!!
• E-Waste Comprises of waste electronic goods which are not fit for their originally
intended use
• E-Waste contains toxic substances and chemicals, which are likely to have adverse
effect on environment and health, if not handled properly
ICT accounts for 25% of the e-waste
Type of eWaste:
Telecommunication Waste: Mobile phones, Telephones, Cables, etc.
Electrical Waste: Switches, Relays, Connectors, etc.
Electronic Waste: PCBs, Equipment; Machinery IC, etc.
Cable Waste: PVC, Pre Insulated Copper, Aluminum Cable, etc.
Chemical Waste: Chemical Sludge and Residue
E-waste is the most rapidly growing segment of the
hazardous waste stream.
It contains valuable & recoverable materials such as aluminium, copper, gold, etc.
Electronic equipments can be refurbished, reused and recycled, and hence can help
in conserving natural resources and the energy needed to produce new items
E-waste also contains toxic and hazardous materials including mercury, lead and
chemical flame retardants, which have the potential to leach into our soil and water.
7. eWaste Effects
Environmental Hazards:
Old models of TV & Computer Monitors, contain poisonous metal –lead.
Dumping of consumer electronics contributes to approximately 40 percent of the lead in landfills.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) emits chlorinated dioxins and furans, when it is disposed.
Cadmium and mercury, found in the monitors of obsolete desktop PCs, contaminates ground water if
not properly disposed.
Future generations will find it difficult to obtain clear water supply, due to the improper methods
adopted for disposal of electronic waste.
Cadmium (found in laptop batteries) is hazardous for the environment due to its chronic toxic property.
Health Hazards:
• Harmful metal absorbed by the human body through contaminated water. High levels of metallic mercury
damages the nervous system and the developing fetus.
• Circuit boards and batteries contain cadmium, which is known to be a carcinogen - directly involved in
the promotion of various types of cancer.
• Damage to central and peripheral nervous systems, blood systems and kidney damage.
• Chronic damage to the brain. Affects brain development of children.
• Respiratory and skin disorders due to bioaccumulation in fishes.
• Asthmatic bronchitis; DNA damage; Reproductive and developmental problems; Lung Cancer; Damage to
heart, liver and spleen.
8. Benefits of eWaste Recycling
Conserves natural resources. Recycling recovers valuable
materials that can be reused to make new products.
As a result, we save energy, reduce pollution, reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, and save resources by extracting
fewer raw materials from the earth.
Protects your surroundings. Safe recycling of outdated electronics
promotes sound management of toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury.
Helps others. Donating your used electronics benefits your community by
passing on ready-to-use or refurbished equipment to those who need it.
Create Jobs. E-Cycling creates jobs for professional recyclers and
refurbishers and creates new markets for the valuable components that are
dismantled.
Saves landfill space. E-waste is a growing waste stream. By recycling
these items, landfill space is conserved.

10. eWaste Issues and Challenges in India
“Integrating business with environment”
11. eWaste Issues in India
Rapidly increasing e-waste volumes, both domestically generated as well
as through imports. Imports are often disguised as second-hand computer
donations towards bridging the digital divide or simply as metal scrap.
No Accurate Estimates of the Quantity of e-waste generated and
recycled.
Low Level of Awareness amongst manufacturers and consumers of the
hazards of incorrect e-waste disposal.
Rudimentary Techniques adopted for e-waste recycling such as acid
leaching and open air burning resulting in severe environmental damage
Little or no knowledge of toxins in e-waste and are exposed to serious
health hazards.
Inefficient recycling processes result in substantial losses of material
value
“Cherry-picking” by recyclers who recover precious metals and improperly
dispose of the rest.
