Available Material to Make a Shift towards Science Instruction a
Common Place Experience.
Abstract
An intervention cum action reach was undertaken to collate and create
science activities with matchsticks at upper primary level. To objectives
were of the action research were: (1) to develop ten activity sheets with
match sticks as the main material for imparting hands-on experience; (2)
to implement the intervention as monthly activity and analyze students’
reactions and comments on the intervention. In the activity sheets the
experimental procedure of stating objective, materials, diagram,
procedure, observations, analysis and results was followed. The ten
activities included in the intervention were the matchstick rocket; center
of gravity toy; surface tension; expansion of air; lever balance for up-
thrust of water; electro-scope; evaporation gauge; wave model; non-
standard measurement of weight and length; chromatography and
partial burning. The student’s reactions to the intervention were
significantly positive (p≤.05, D.F. =2, N= 30, age: 12-14, grade six).
