Rule protest
If team captain feels the rules were misinterpreted
or misapplied, the referee will stop the game to
resolve the protest
The team captain can discuss the situation with
the officials and supervisor
Eligibility Protest
If team captain notices that a player on the other
team is playing while ineligible, he or she needs to
inform the officials and supervisor

The ball is out of bounds:
The ball hits the floor outside the boundaries.
The ball contacts the antenna inside or over the net.
The ball travels over the net outside the antenna.

A team causes the ball to contact the ceiling on the
opponent’s side of the net.
Note: A team may play the ball off the ceiling on their side of
the net if the team has hits remaining
A served ball contacts the ceiling.
13. Co Rec ModificationsCo Rec Modifications
A team shall consist of a maximum of three men and
three women on the court. A minimum of two men and
two women is required to begin the game.
If the ball is contacted three times by a team, a
woman/male must contact the ball at least once.
The serving order and positions on the court at service
shall be an alternation of man-woman or vice-versa.
Substitution is on a player-for-player basis (man-for-man,
woman-for-woman), but the two options for substitution
are maintained.

The ball enters an area declared “out of play”
For safety reasons, the play is blown immediately
dead

21. Playing the Ball
Definitions
Definition of a contact: the ball hits the player.
Definition of a hit: the player actively tries to contact the ball.
Definition of a completed attack: the ball is contacted
above the net and breaks the plane of the net or is legally
blocked.
Definition of block: the act of using one’s body to deflect an
attack into your half of the court.
Team has a maximum of 3 hits to return the ball over the net
Exception: a block is not considered one of the contacts
Illegal Hit: ball comes visibly to rest or prolonged contact w/
player
Holding, catching, throwing, rolling, lifting, & pushing
Penalty = point and side out for opposition
24. Playing the Ball cont’d
Simultaneous contact by teammates
A simultaneous contact shall count as one hit.
A simultaneous contact is defined as two teammates
hitting the ball at the same time.
Simultaneous contact by opponents
If two opponents simultaneously and instantaneously contact the
ball over the net (i.e. a joust), the ball remains in play, and the
team receiving the ball is entitled to another three hits.
If the ball contact the antenna after a joust, a replay shall
be declared.
25. Playing the Ball cont’d
Blocking the Ball
If the opposing team has exhausted its three hits, a player
may block or attack the ball on the other side of the net.
Examples:
When the team has used all three hits
In official’s judgment, the opposing team directs the
ball towards the team’s court
Ball is falling near the net, and the officials feels that
no member of the attacking team could make a
legitimate play on ball
26. Back Line Attack
Back Line player may attack ball if he or she
leaves the floor from behind the 10 ft. line and
its imaginary extension
Any part of foot touches 10 ft. line: Foul and pt. for
opposition
Back line player may not attempt to block or
attack the ball in front of the 10 foot line
29. Service
Server has five seconds to make a legal
serve
Server must wait for official’s beckon and whistle
Note: use preventative officiating & tell players to wait for
whistle
Re-serves
A re-serve is a second chance to serve the ball
A server will only receive one re-serve per term of service
Examples of re-serve:

› Ball must be served from within the service area
› Jump serves are permitted.
› Server must leave the floor from within the serving area and can not
land outside the service area until ball has been contacted.
› The served ball may contact the net and fall on the opponent’s side.
Players on both sides of the net must be within the boundaries of their
half of the court at the time of service.
Players on the serving team cannot block the view of the receiving
team before the service.

FOOT FAULT
The server may not step onto the court (including the boundary line)
until after he/she has contacted the ball.
ILLEGAL BACK ROW ATTACK
A back row player completes a block or attack in front of the ten foot
line.
ILLEGAL HIT:
A player has prolonged contact with the ball, causing the ball to come
to rest.
DOUBLE HIT
One player consecutively hits the ball at any point.
Exception: After completing a block, the player can legally hit the
ball.
After the first hit, the ball contacts the player more than once.

NET FOUL
When attempting to attack, block, or play the ball in any way, the player contacts the
net.
Incidental contact will be ignored.
Contacting the net with clothing or hair will be ignored.
ILLEGAL BLOCK/SCREEN
Illegal Block
Following a serve, a player on the receiving team completes a block, directing the
serve back into the opponents court.
A Back Row player may not complete a block.
Illegal Screen
No player on the serving team may intentionally screen the opponent from viewing
the server.
DELAY OF SERVICE
A server fails to serve within five seconds.
34. Centerline Fouls
Center Line Foul: Player’s foot, feet, or hand has
completely crossed the center-line
For a Foul…the entire foot or hand must be over the line
The foot or hand can shadow the line
If player falls over the line, it is a violation
Penalty is point and side out for opposition
35. Centerline FoulsCenterline Fouls
A player may touch the floor across the center line
provided part of one or both feet/hands remains on or
above the center line.
It is a violation if a player completely crosses the center
line under the net.
A player may cross the extension of the center line
outside the court at any time provided he/she does not
interfere with play by the opposing team.
While across the center line extension outside the court,
any player may play a ball that has not completely
crossed the vertical plane of the net extended.

In volleyball, a yellow card is a warning without penalty.
Three yellow cards issued to a single team will result in forfeiture

Entering or leaving the court without permission from the
officials
Persistently committing violations
Foul or vulgar language
Questioning or showing resentment of the decisions or
judgement of the officials
Unsportsmanlike conduct

Red Card
A red card shall result in one point and the serve being
awarded to the non-offending team
A red card may be issued subsequently to a yellow card or
issued immediately.
A red card shall be treated as two yellow cards.
A red card may be issued for behavior including but not
limited to the following:
Entering or leaving the court without permission from the officials
Persistently committing violations
Foul or vulgar language
Questioning or showing resentment of the decisions or
judgement of the officials
Unsportsmanlike conduct

A player receiving yellow and red cards is ejected from the
game.
When issued immediately, Yellow and Red cards shall be
equivalent to two yellow cards.

Fighting
Foul or abusive language directed at another player, an
official, or IM staff
Spitting at an opponent, teammate, or game official
Attempting to kick or strike an opponent, official, or IM staff
